Cut out thin, dead or damaged shoots. thin out the centres. Cut the rest of the stems back just above an out- ward facing bud ...yet accordîng to some experts, you could get bet- ter results just slasbing the roses with an electric trimmer. Pruning trials conducted at the Royal Na- tional Rose Society's gardens at St. Albans, England, may mean a change in the way we prune roses. There, one set of roses were pruned in March in the traditional way. One set were rough-pruned with secateurs, without bothering to cut just above the bud. the other set were slashed with a hedgetrimimer. The hedgetrimmer cuts were rag- ged, with lots of snagged and rip- ped shoots. The initial results were quite staggering and will produce shock waves among rose en- thusiasts. The roses rough-pruned or slashed with a hedgetrîmmer pro- duced more ne'w urowth than those traditionally pruned. Floribundas produced more and better-quality flowers. Hybrid teas produced equally'good blooms, however they were pruned. Like alI good things there appears to be a catch, The Royal National rose Society says, "from our initial results, rough pruning seems to give better short- termi results than traditional prun- ing. However, we do not advise that you switch pruning methods until we bring you more long-termn resuiits;." One thing for sure, the results of one year's experimenta- i on will not lead me to plug in the hiedgetrimmer for MY roses.
