When other kids wcre playing soccer, Doug was hanging around the hangars at a nearby airfield watching planes soar into the *Ild blue yonder. Later, he learned ta fly, was employed at an aircraft company and ultimately became a pilot with the Royal Air Force. Today, the retircd North York resident's interest in planes is as keen as ever, although it's taken a, different twist. He makes classic model planes. Nothing toc, unusual -about that. But Doug's planes are in botules! That's right. He býiIds the planes mostly front plywood or plastic. Then he takes thcm apart piece by piece, inserts tbcm througbt the neck of the boule us- ing long, thin pliers, then gingerly glues them together. It's an amaz- ing tbing ta watch. Painter is thought to be the only person anywhere who can achieve this complex feat. It was enough for Rpleys "Believe It or Not" ta award hlm a certificate, and feature bis work in one of their syndicated cartoons which go to hundreds of newspapers the world over. Doug seems to take it ail in strîde. A strai], wiry, vibrant man in his seventies, he seems unconcerned: about the many awards he bas. received for bis work. But he bub-' bles with entusiasm as be tells you about the background of each plane wbicb he bas researcbed witb- metîculoui care. In one oId prune juice jug, be's assembled a brief history of air- craft. He's crammed in niodels of the Wright Brothers' Kittybawk, a sleek concorde and a space shuttlel In another bottie is one of Canada 's famed snowbirds, and a Red Arrow front the British Areobatic teani. In anotber is a "wing-walker" stan- ding atop.an old biplane. The kind of thing' you used to sec when "barnstormers" would perforni at faits. In the past decade Painter bas boWted over 200 of the little planes. His New York apartmnent is chock full of them.i. t takes weeks, even months, ta complete a single model. "The biggest problem,"1 says Doug, "is finding the right boulies. Thse next is finding the patience-to stay wîtb it. Wben you're in there, you can't rush or you'll ruin thse whole show." He says be'd like to teach thse craft to someone, but wben people see what's involved they back away front it. "I can't say I blame tbem. Only an idiot like nsyself wouild try it," hc laughs. 1Far froni being an idiot, Painter is a bighly skilled craftsman witb a flair for thse unique. Just ask tIse man fromn Ripley's.
