4-ORONO WEEKLY TIMES, WEDNESDAY. OCTOBER 31, 1990 -SPORTS- Orono Tyke Basebali at the top again From the better late than neyer department were happy to amiounce the -great success of, the Orono, Tyke Basebaîl Teain. For the second year in a row they have fiitished with the post season victories. To begin the year the ceachittg staff was faced with a teamt that had only 3 veterans returtiing from last yers championshîp teain and 13 young .and'for the most inexperienced players. It figured, to be a rebuilding year. After losing 6.of the first 9 gaines. they were looking bleak, but somehow the coaches and the veterans started to instal the work effort and mental ability it takes to win. The team won the next two gamnes at the beginning of August which led into a ournament in Courtice. At this tournament Orono was picked to be among the weaker teams and expected to drop out early. Boy did they fool everyone there by winning ail 3 gaines and therefore the tournament championship. The toumnament was won on the strong pitching arms of Ryan Dewulf, Deepak AngI and most of aIl Brett Maartense. Defence was prov.ided by Devon and Bobby Witheridge, Ton Dibartolomeo, Matthew Perry and Keegan Brown. The big bats came, from Tim Hegarty, Phillip Williamson, Jeff Finlay and Dcepak Angl. Although surprising, it was also very pleasing for this team to serve notice that they were a serions teani. It wasn't easy with a 7-4 win over Cobourg and a 13-8 win over Whitby and a 13-12 extra inning win over Newcastle. Orono then finished its regular season 3 wins and 2 losses to end at 8-8 plus 3 wins at the tournament. The team now entered the double knockout post season play with a great deal of confidence in their abilities to play this gameý Orono was 4th in the season and opened play against the Lawmen Who were 3rd Manro'man what'a way to start with a very convincing 27-8 win over a tough opponent. Orono's néxt gaine was against the 2nd place team Steve's Auto front Newcastle an d again won 14-6. Thanks te the strong and efficient' pitching of Brett Maartense. The 3rd gamne was against the first place team C.O.A.W. out of Courtice and -showed how shakey a Young team can be and Murphys law can talce over, in that anything that can go wrong will. Courtice 27, Orono 7.This was Oronois first loss and since they were the last teain to receive a loss moved to the finals, their opponent would be determined by the winner of a gaine between Steve's Auto and C.O.A.W. Steves Auto won on a close score of 13-11. The last gaine of the contest and of the year was a magnificient display of this teains talents, from the superb pitching, timely hitting and the perfect defence it was ail there. Orono tumed in a 22-12 win. It's hoped that these kids flot only learned something about basebaîl but aiso something about themselves and their team mates. You have to work as a team to have success. *Carson's Law: It's better to bc rich and healthy than poor and sick. Law of Revelation: The hidden flaw neyer remains hidden. Mencken's Metalaw: For every hurnan problem, there is a nea t, simple solution; and it is always wrong. Clarke's Third Law: Any sufficiently advancedý l technology is indistinguishable from magic.
