There were approximately 50 students li botli the girls' team and the boys' teamn, and the competitors were froin grades three Up to grade six. Letter to Editor First of al I wish to applaud the Orono - Amateur Athletic Association. Your liard work and dedication to our children and community are Irecognized and appreciated by many of us altliough at trnes it seems that ail you hear is criticisin and al you receive is bard knocks froin every cornerfor you efforts. My letter is sparked by a recent one in particular, but there have been others which have angered me as weil. As a 'concemed' parent I fail to understand the comments in last weeks letter froin Mrs. Parry. I would like to question her as to hier doubts, -and what- are the "plitics"sbe bas seen. My son lias played and enjoyed hockey in Orono for approximnately 10 years. In that turn e h ba played o n both tri county and OMHA teams and I feel heelias certainly benefited from bis experiences. lie bas grown into a young man and I feel hee bas learned t respect the opinion of others, altliough not always agreeing witli that opinion. He lias learned to deal with peers and aduits away from influences of home and scliool. He lias learned sportsmanship and control of ones- self, even in times when it bas been very difficult. He bas learned to win graciously and above ail heelias learned to loose with honour and not to always blamne the other guy. I can honestiy say I have not seen any politics and flot felt there were hypocrites at work. I amn dealing with hockey as it seems to be the present issue but he has alsoplayed soccer and basebaîl and my daugliter also lias played soccer and basebail. Ail of my comments apply to these as well. Each season brings new challenges in the forin of new teani mates, new coaches, referees etc. Not every expenence was good but neither is life. It is al leamning and growing wbether it be the result of too little or too mucli ice time, critique, penalties, conrduct of yourself or someone -e, dealing witli people froin a \,.fferent upbringing and on and on Pictured above is -the Ki rby tean with Mrs. Adams. Resuits from Kirby are as follows: Girls' Tearn: Jennifer Schillings 4tli, Katrina Hartmann 7th, Laura Spencer 9th, Sara Hartmann l4tli, Roberta Childs l7tli, Natasha His l9th, Jacki Green 2lst, Elke Shroeder,23rd, Erin Moore 24th, it might go. Each of these things might be perceîved or read depending on circumstance. Chidren and aduits alike must learn Io look at ourselves and see as others-do, difficult as that may be at times and- accept some criticisin and correction as well as the pat on the back and the "well dones" 1 feel as parents we shouid put forth every effort'in developing a sense of pride in home and community and work to support our own rather than looking to 1.greener pastures", in this case a hockey team which perhaps doesnt trvlas far or is maybe supposedly a better team for our young stars. We also nee d to support our VOLUNTEERS whether they bc coachies and helpers, the athietie association or committee members etc.Their jobs are done without pay and often at a sizeable cost to then and usually are done without thanks or appreciation. It ail comes froin a desire to help someone else out and the goodness of their hearts. There are many members of the Athletic Association who no longer have children linvolved in the activities unless perhaps they are grandchildren and in thosc cases these people have neyer let their interest cease. 1 do recail that there was a memo with the notice of hockey registration published in the newspaper that there was to be an "Ail Sports Parents Information Night!" the end of August. This was a Urne that comments whether good or bad could have been aired, suggestions,,for the upcoming season made'or whatever youi wished to ask. I'm guilty for not attending along with "ail" but ONE other person. The OAAA werc there to meet with us but wc weren't. Skating Club. The Orono Arena management was told that the times weren't acceptable. may 1 ask, should Oronos time have been given up so Orono kids playing under Bowmanvilles name could play at home.
