While sitting at a sewing machine in her Whitby bungalow, she crafts wierd and wondrous crea- lions used as props for theatre com- panies. She has always had a yen for the theatre and about 10 years ago ap- proached the manager of- the Whit- by Courtbouse theatre to see if she could fit into their productions in some way. They needed a dresser at the lime, and she began assisting in that capacity. But before long the theatre peo- ple discovered that Dolores was quite a seamstress. In fact, a part- time teacher of power sewing and crafts at a community college. So when they needed a prop that look- ed like a iguana for Night of the Ig- uana, they asked if she could make it for them. It was a new challenge. Dolores went to the library, got a few ideas for designs and made a very realistic-looking iguana out of foam and fibre. Since then, she has made all sorts of similar props, many of tbem now sitting around ONTARIO MUSHROOMS EASY MARINATED ONTARIO MUSHROOMS Also called Mushrooms àla Grecque, this make-ahead recipe for cold marinated mushrooms is a snap to prepare in the mîcrowave. There 's a ferocious-looking dragon's head that was in The King and 1, a gorilla from Cabaret, a talking camel who had a part in Alibaba, to mention just a few. As time went on, other amateur theatre companies in ýCentral Ontario began calling upon Dolores for props and special et- fects. She doesn't charge for themn and when- they haVe, piayed their parts she brings them home. She likes having themn around.-' When we were there, sbe was working on a pig's head to be used in a production of Foxfire. she showed us the process of making it from the first sketch, to the patterns and sewing of the pieces, the gluing, and finally the painting. Usually she bas plenty of time to put the props together, but sbe had to do the dragons head in 48 bours, which put her under real pressure. The creations that come from Mrs. Holliday's hobby may, in some cases, be as vital to a theatre production as tbe actors, dancers or musicians. Yet ber efforts go un- noticed by tbe audience. ."Tbat's the way it's supposed to be," says Dolores. "If 1 do the job properly, the things 1 do should just blend into the production, on stage. " Meanwhile, she sits at her sewing machine surrounded by ber variotis and diverse critters. They're a motley crew, but they're quiet, easy 10 get along with, and don't run around the house. Just stay prop- ped-up in their proper places.
