Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, December 19, 1990 Town wants control of further Port Glranby study plan The Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB), a body responsible for the licencixg of mantenan~e of the Port Granby Low Level Waste site, met in Bowmanville last Thursday evening when extension of the licence was discussed. The Board received a staff report at the Bowmanville meeting as well as a lengthy report from the Town and comments fromn area citizens. It aise received a report from an officiai of the federal Siting Task Force. Following lte Bowmanville meeting the Board reconvened in Oshawa on Friday morning when it postponed any decision on the extension of lte licence which expires at the end of 1990. A decision is expected sometime this week, following a review of comments made at the Bowmanville meeting. The AECB staff report submnitted to th:e Board in Bowmanvilie stated that some il inspections of the Port Granby waste site had been made since April of 1989. It stated that the bluffs had been stabilized and thai erosion had been siopped. The su1bmission also stated that there had been one major overflow at the site into the lake thaï the impact on the lake would be insignificant. The report aise pointed to the fact that waste had been found buried outside of then existing fences but with the moving of te fences ail waste was now contained within the fencing. hi lias been determined by staff that the site is being eperated and maintainied in a responsible manner and, in the short term, there is ne titreat of waste reaching the lake. Staff recominended an extension te lte licence for a twe year period. A representative of the federal Siting Task Force outiined the process of finding a sitable permanent waste site through a ce- operative process with willing municipalities. The bus service, proposed by the Rae goverument, is to service Peterborough and Durham Region with transportation into Toronto Lýhrough a connection with GO rail at Whitby or Oshawa. The train group sbay it is a waste of money which could be spent better in other areas. Paul Pagnuelo who heads up the group states that people just won't use the bus service. Hie refers to other attemrpts for such a service and which he claims have ail failed. Pagnuelo said he is flot opposed to bus service for General Motors but that to try to extend the service to Toronto is flot possible.
