The Orono Police Trustees were informed on Monday evening tbat the Orono Water systemn now bas over 300 customers. Daily average use of water amounts to around 30,000 gallons but recently consumption bas juniped to a high of 70,000 gallons per day. On Monday, July 28 a record rainfail feUl in the Kendal area. Mr. Allen Foster who keeps the weather record on the rain gauge said that two and seven-eighth inches of rain feli on Monday. Clarke Higli School student, Elizabeth Spry of R.R. 1, Orono, returned home this week from Drurnmondville, Quebec where she bas been the guest of Evelyn Guay, a student of Le Presentation de Marie Sclxool. The Port Hope High School is currently considering a switch to the semester system siailar ta that that bas been ta operation at Clarke High School for the past nuaiber of years. At a recent public meeting some 30 parents expressed their views to the semester system. One resident expressed the view that it had been their experience tbat the sysem was not positive. It was stated that the systeai produced more stress and as well was foumd to be monotonous. At the presenit Urne Port Hope operates on a traditional two-day systemn. On day one, students attend four courses out of eight they are taking that year. Day two they attend the remaining four. tlnder the semester systemn students take four courses from September to the end of January and the remaining four to the end of June. Somne of those in attendance at the meeting said the semester system does load students with bomework on a continua] basis and tbat with subjects such as French the gap between the French courses are Just long, being possibly over baif a year. The Port Hope School bad setup a student needs commnittce which bas suggested that school change- over to a semeste system. Also 58 percent of the teachers have supported the change to a mester Syàtem. The school is awaiting input from both parents and students before making a decision a nd taking it to the board of education.
