Bill Bramch's Ontario Oreno -Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 9, 1991-13 CRO'1S CANADA MARKETPLAÇE jf'S FAST - IT'S EASY! ONE CALL, ONE BILL DOES IT ALL. THINK BIG - CALL THIS NEWSPAPER FOR DETAILS. They have big plans. at a reconstructed naval and military base at Penetang'on Southern Georgian Bay. The base is one of my favorite historical spots around the province. Its only a few miles from our farm, and I used to hang around there from time to time when they were building it a few decades ago. Back around 1817, the British thought it likely would be a good idea to build some sort of deterrent against the Yankees, wÀho, as you will know, were causing a mess of trouble in the era. So they constructed a garrison, and today in the summer season you see customed soldiers and sailors going about their daily tasks. They even have a few pompous-looking bureaucrats sitting at desks in one of the buildings. One thing they havent had is a navy. They have a couple skiffs and harbour boats called gigs, and six years ago constructed a beautiful schooner called the Bee. But now they are planning to add ,more ships to give the place a truly nautical look, and hopefully attract additional tourises and historians. Late in October the schooner Perseverence was acquired from Old Fort Williani. It's a replica of a supply. ship that was burned by the Americans during the war of 1812., The replica is a tall ship, an 80 footer, built in the 1970s and now in need of repair. Itwas hauled by a truck front Thunder Bay along the Trans Canada highway. A special permit was- needed and they managed t0 bring it down ini four days going about 20 miles an hour. Carpenters will be working on it this winter and hopefully it will be ready t0 join the Bee next spring to take people on short cruises. They're also building a Joly boat this winter. Jolly boats are smail craft that were used to go ashore fromt larger ships. Historians I've talked to don't seema quite sure of how they got the name. Maybe it's because they took sailors ashore for a night out. The next move is to build the 100-foot warship Tecumseh which was also sunk by the Americans. They have tie hull of the original on display at the base. Added to all of this, they expect frequent visits from the brigantines Playfair and Pathfinder which ply the waters of the Great Lakes as training vessels during the summer. Shiver me timbers.
