They don't al go south There hasn't been much bird watching on my part of late but Bill Bunting and I did take an opportunfity to catch a glimpse of a few birds on Sunday and there was at least one surprise. But before, we get to the Sunday event we could mention that a Blue Heron has been making its appearance along the Orono Creek in an area south of Taunton Road. It is not the first year that a Blue Heron has been noted spending the winter along the creek and apparently there must be food available to keep it in the area. Bob Faulkner has reported it i the- creek at the north of the sub- division and Bill Bunting watched it fly along the creek valley during one of bis wallcs. And further Bill tells us one of his neighbours reported that they had seen a pre-historic bird in the creek. No doubt the Blue Heron. Sunday it was off to the Whitby harbour which was fairly well iced in and as such no birds. But walking out to the end of the warf the lake came in full view with a large flock of Common ,Mergansers, a couple of Buffleheads, a few Goldeneyes and Scoup., A good assortment of ducks for the area. It was a surprise when we caught a view of this whitish bird flapping a while and then soarig for a while of shore in the lake. Immediately you knew it wasn't a gull by its flîghî. It tumns out it was a Marsh Hawk and that's another surprise being up here for the winter. The Marsh hawk did have company, not over the lake, but back iniland. A number of Red Tail Hawks were sighted along with a Rough Legged Hawk, one of a number that winter in tins area. We did take the opportunity to visit Lynde Shore Conservation Area. It is here that the Authority has a number of bird feeders in place in a small bush area. Generally the birds in this area urono swimmers pictured above top (1-r)-Diane Jenkins, Tracy Arnott, Caria Werry and Scott Boumeester. The birds were there but they were feeding off natural foods in the shrubs and grasses. There were some twenty doves perched in one tree and of course the regulars as chickadees, tree sparrows, Orono- Weekly Times, Wednesday, January 9, 1991-3 &eare-dtowards -e-1 year olds, emphasizes efficient swimming through, stroke improvement, proper turns andfast starts.
