A further delay ini construction lias pushed the openingdate to February and possibly later. Good news for recyclingof paper The Atlantic Packaging newsprint plant ini Whitby has met the requirements of the Region of Durham as to waste water being directed to the Whithy sewage plant and it is flow up and running, according to recent reports. The plant had started a numnber of weeks ago but flows from the plant to the sewage plant was exceeding the lirait of 2 million gallons daily. The plant, using waste newsprint is manufacturing recycled newsprint and tissue. More volunteers needed to help han dicapped Althougli somec 80 residents throughout the Region are assisting on a volunteer basis ini befriending developmentally handicapped children and adults more are needed. Men are especially needed and it is noted that assistan ce is often quite easy. 1Further information availablje through phoning 576-3261 Immersion French moves to High School The Peterboroughi Victoria k Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education is extending its frenchi immersion program into High SchooI at St. Marys School in Cobourg. Frenchi immersion lias been offered at the school up to grade eight but as the grade eight class is now graduating to grade nine the programn is being extended to higli school. The Board is offering four credits in frenchi in the first year which will be extended in the future. The board is committed to the program irregardless of the nmber of students attendirig. Osh awa Symphiony ready for concert The Oshawa Symphony is presenting its third concert of the 1990-91 season on Sunday, January l3th. It is being held in the Eastdale Collegiate Theatre cornencing at 8 p.m. Winston Webber will be conducting the orchestra, $555,000 in funding saves senior's program The Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge heaitli Unit lias received an amount of $555,000 from the province to be used for the Health Unit's Integrated Homemaker program which lias been designed to help seniors remain in their homes rather than seeking accommodation in insitutions. SThe Health Unit was to phase out the program as funding had been reduced to the unit for 199 1. Wells tested poorly pla n water system Haldimand Township lias received a water test report of some 148 wells in Grafton. 0f this number 82 tested poorly. The Township along witli the Ministry of the Environment are considering a municipal water s upply for the village. Environment takes prescident over burning of trees The Town of Cobourg withdrew the annual christmnas tree burning ceremony which had become a community event over the past years. Protection of the environiment took precedent over the annual event and that sucli was sending out the wrong message to the young people. It is part of an exchange in which students from St. Marys had spent three weeks in Kazan, a city in the U.S.S.R. Plainville School receives energy-efficient award The principal at Plainville Pu blic School lias received. on behalf of the board,_anaward of distinction trom Ontario Hydro and the Canadian Electrical Association. The award was presented in Toronto recently. Plainville was the only school to receive the award at the ceremony. The Northumberland and Newcastle Board had installed a heat-pump at the school thus saving energy for heating. The councillors have been paid $100.00 a meeting and ini 1990 the remunerationi went well above budget due to the number of meetings. The county expects a $40,000 dleficit for 1990. Litter and dumping increases in Ganaraska Dumping of waste in the Ganaraska Forest has been reported to be on the increase. Haif-ton truck loads of drywall, shingles and building materials are the most common waste being dumped in the forest. Although the Ganraska notes an increase neighbouring municipalities find that such has not been on the increase on their sideroads. No extended holidays for students ,, Ibe Durham Separate Sehool Board had considered closing the schools for an extra week during th e Christmuas holidays as- a means of cutting back on operational costs of the schools. A report stated that savings would have been minimal so il was back to school on Monday of this week for the students.
