Suzanne Atkînson, a spokesperson for the fundraising committee said 19 Roseneath- based families have each pledged the $5,000 needed ta save a horse. Other donations have corne from British Columbia, New Brunswick and California. Campaign against liquor store move It is rumored that Port Hope's liquor store located downtown, will be moved ta a new site on Highway 2. -This lias generated a campaign aga inst the stores' move by local merchants, council and the Port Hope brandi of the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario who say the liquor store is an anchor business and sucli has a respons ,ibility ta it's fellow merchants to 'remain in the downtown core and-help generate business. Wife abuse pilot project for Durham A $30,000 grant lias been received ta allow a pilot project to be undertaken with eight women who have gone througli the regular abuse crisis counselling services provided by the Regional Social, Services department ta be continued. The projeet will provide support for wife abuse victirns as, they make the , long-term adjustments ta new housing, employment and general self- sufficiency. New environmental group formed A new urnbrella environmental group is being formed in Durham. An invitation is being extended to interest organizations and individuals ta join. The new Oshawa bus service is expected ta be in place this suramer. Genealogical Society interested in our family histories The Whitby-Oshawa brandi of the Ontario Genalogical Society are actively interested in famnily histories of 'old Durham and Ontario Counties. ~This would include ail former municipalities now ini the the Town of Newcastle.
