Students all across the N/N Board of Education are preparing to give their speech in front of their classmates and hoping to succeed in winning at their school and compete in the Royal Cauadian Legion competition. Mrs. Bailey's grade 6 class will be double prepared tbis year. They recently participated in their class in a Bowmanville Toastmasters Youth Leadership Program which is designed to develop the speaking and leadership skills of young people. The program is a worksbop, which was couducted in eight sessions at the Orono Public School. Studeuts learned how to prepare aud present a speech, how to evaluate and effective listening skills by the end of tbe eigbth session. Mrs. rene Konzelmn, Division Lieutenant Govemnor and Connie Nelson, President for the Bowmanville Toastmasters Club, volunteered thèir tîne to corne out and run the program over tbe eight weeks. Mrs, Kouzelman said "the, program helps studeuts overcome shyness aud the reluctance to speak in front of an audience." "The grade 6 class have been marvelous and enthusiastic" added Mrs. Konzehnan. The students seemed to appreciate the effort and time the toastmasters gave to the cause aud spoke abouthtem with great respect and enthusiasm. All studeuts voted at the end of the program for a student for best speaker, evaluator and impromptu tak. Best speaker was won by Scott MacDonald. He prepared a speech and, delivered it in front of the class usiug tbe gestures and speaking skills he recently leamed. Shelda Marie Wood was elected best evaluator and Brian Dewulf was voted best impromptu speaker. Lief Giese a grade 6 studeut pointed out that "table topic is sinillar to question and answer, just remember PRES, Point, Reason, Example Summarize." The class was asked a question and then Table Topic Master Dîna Ross selected a student to give a one minute vocal respouse. Ryan Dewulf found the Parliamentary Procedure very interestiug aud made mention of the ever so popular gavel. 1 Toastmasters and the kuowledge of parliamentary procedure is important for everyone. Most organizations today are run by volunteers, many of wbich bave no idea what "Roberts Rules" are. The Bowmanville Toastmasters enjoy participating in meetings or programns educatiug those who wish tolearu. Participants gain experience by conducting the meeting themselves. Two toastmasters lead the program. Their role is to explain and demonstrate some of the techniques discussed, Ito offer encouragement and to advise. Bowxuanville Toastmasters meet Tuesday eveniug at 7:30 at St. Joh's Anglican Church. There is no pressure to take part, just to corne sud observe. Mrs. Bailey's students presented Mrs. Nelson and Mrs. Kouzelmnan with a lovely bouquet of flowers and a large tbank you iu the form of a card. They camne front Toronto, Wbitby, Oshawa, Peterborough, Orono, Kendal, Newcastle and Newtonville. They werent there to volunteer for anytbing, to fight against anything or to discuss any business, but to sit back and enjoy a potluck dinner and a relaxing evening witb like minded souls. Before long, they had most of the audience singing along, and Jan Mayer provided a number of people witb spoo ns for a rhythm section. Murray Payne played harmonica and "bouies". The evening bad the flavour of something from days gone by as people from all ages gathered together for an1 evening of bomnemade entertainment.
