6-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesdfly, February 20, 1991 Tykes win tournament Orono PeeWee just eclged out of Championshipwinby Cobourg by Shelley Allin The Orono Tykes participated in the Haldimand Minor Hockey Tournament on the weekend. Tbey played three exciting gaines. In tie first gane the score was 10 - 1 for Orono. * Christopher Wilhelm scored that most important first goal just three minutes into the gaine with the assist fron Jeffrey Thompson as this decides the winner i the event of a tie gamne. Next Matt Reid scored on the rebound froin' Brandon Hilîs. Baltimore scored sbortly after this. Jeff Tbompson livened tings up again and scored with Brandon Hilîs getting the assist. Matt Reid scored againi througli the "A" hole and again Brandon Hilîs got the assist. Wow! Christopher Wilhelm scored again with a raised backhand and with the belp of Jeff Thompson. Parents were roaring with excitement when Jeff Thompson scored with an assist going to Chris Wilhelm. If Matt Reid manages to get the puck, I think we al anticipate a goal. Again he scored with an assist going to Lee Allun and another goal immediately after with assist to Chris Kirkbride. For a quick change, Lee Allun scored his first career goal on an assist from M ichael Knapp. Following a digging determination, Kyle Moore made that sweet lth goal to end the gaine with an assist going to Christopher Bouley. Matbew Caruana played a good gaine in goal along with alI the other tean mates. The second was a little more challenging, or at least by the score. orono won 3 to 1 against the home teani Grafton. Matt Reid scored the first goal with an assist from. Chris Wilhelm. The second goal Matt Reid scored on a breakaway unassisted. Jeffrey Tbompson scored off a pass froin Chris Wilhelm. Lee Allin played goal stopping many attempts. Botb teains played bard. It was tinie for a little break before the championsbip gaine at six o'clock later that day which paid off. The Orono Tykes under the direction of Art Reid and Jin Wilblem had a victorious day taking home the Haldimand rournament Trophy and everyone their keeper trophy. The championship gaine was against Warkworth. It didn't stait off as well as the two previous gaines as_ Warkworth scored just seconds into the gaine. It wasn't to long when, guess who, Matt Reid scored Oronos fIrst goal on an assist froin Michael Knapp. Matt Reid scored again unassisted this turne. Some parents were starting to go hoarse by this time of the day. Brandon Hilîs scored the third goal with a pass froin Chris Wilbelm. The lait and final goal was scored by Chris Wilbelm unassisted. Mathew Caruan played aniother great gane in goal. The Tykes went home a very proud and tired hockey teain. One week later the Orono Tykes ,were eager to-participate i another tournament in Bowmanville. Although they played well, they did not repeat their victory as they did the week before. The first gaine was brigbt and early Saturday moming against D & R Flooring, with the score endîng up 6 - 4 for D & R. Goals were scored by Matt Reid, Chris Wilbelm and Jeff Thompson witb two. Lee Alllin played goal. The second gaine followed around noon against Bowmanville VIP. This gaine ended with an even 3 to 3 tie. Matt Reid scoring and Jeff Thompson scoring twice again._ Mathew Caruana played a super gamne igoal. The final gaine was rescbeduled one bour later as somte of St. Andrews Select players were tied up witb another gane. Orono beld up real well until near the end of the gaine wben Oshawa slipped ahead. Goals for Orono were scored by Brandon iEls and Matt Reid. Orono madie this team work liard for the final score of 6 - 2 i favour of Oshawa. Lee Allin played goal agaln and worked up a real sweat. Tuesday, Feb. 12 Orono played MeGregors and ended the gaine witb a die of three goals each. This was a special gane for Mathew Caruana who scored bis first goal. Their last gaine was played Sunday, Feb. 17 at Orono, aga nist Baker Park, Oshawa. Chris Bouley stood out in goal making several great saves. The first'goal was scored during a mass scramble around the net. Orono Fan Club didn't even realize there had been a goal. Oshawa scored two goals on a breakaway and a third before the end of the second period. Matt Reid scored for Orono with a nice raised shot in Oshawa's net. Unfortunately for tbe Orono Tyke's Oshawa scored three more turnes. Final score Baker Park 6 and Orono 2., "Wlork Want" D&R CUSTOM FENCING and CUSTOM CHAIN SAWING ORONO, ONTARIO 983-9627 Orono vs Grafton February 11, 1991 Orono travelled to Grafton for another gaine of the regular hockey season. Orono seemed to stand out against Grafton dominating throughout most of the gaine with their great skating and passing among teanimates. Grafton gave a great effort but just could not score during the gaine. In the first period Derek Arnold scored two goals, Mark Foster and Drew Hansen each scored one goal. Assistswent to Alan Lacey and Jonathan Burnham. During the second period another four goals were added to Orono's score. They. went to Greg Haxnmond, Derek Anold making bis third of the gaine to eamn himn a hattrick, Jonathan Burnhamn and Alan Lacey. Assists went to: Alan Lacey and Greg- Haniiond. The third period, no goals were scored. Grafton came on a, littie stronger giving Oronos'goalie a few tense moments. But througb the great goaltending of Jeff Goodmurphy and the help of ail teanirates, Orono defeated Grafton Orono Pee Wees runner up for "A" Championship in Warkworth Tournament Saturday, February 16, 1991 Orono travelled to Warkworth to participate in a tournament for U.C.Hl. The day started out great for Orono. Their first gaine against Campbellford was an easy win. They defeated Canipbellford, 13-O. Goals scored were as follows: Alan Lacey receiving a hattrick with three goals, Derek Arnold, Drew Hansen, Frank Van Overloop and Jonathan Burnham each scoring twice, Scott Ransberry and Mark Foster picked up one goal each. Assists went to Greg Hanimond, Drew Hansen, Jonathan Burnhaim, Scott Ransberry, Mark Foster, Frank Van Overloop and Derck Arnold. The second gamne Orono vs Baltimore, proved to be a mucb tougher teain to defeat. But with strong determination among ail teammates, Orono defeated Baltimore 5-3.' The first peiod Baltimore came on strong scoring the first goal. Orono then came back scoring twice to go ahead. Jonathan Burnham took a great pass fromi Drew Hansen to shoot in a fantastic goal. Alan Lacey scored again with the assist going to Drew Hansen and Mark Foster. Baltimore then managed to out skate our players to score again making the score tied. Orono camne right back with a great goal by Derek Arnold to give Orono the lead going into the second period. Assist went to Alan Lacey. Jonathan Burnbam assisted by Mark Foster scored the only goal during the second period. The third period, Baltimore scored again. Although both teains played a great action packed gaine of hockey, Orono came out on top to score one more time. Derek Arnold unassisted, slapped ini the last goal. Now with the first two rounds finished their next rival was Cobourg. Strong skating and great passing among both teanis created a very'exhilaratmng gaine, kept you on the edge of your seat. The first period Alan Lacey scored the first goal assisted by Drew Hansen. Within seconds Cobourg shot in a great goal to tie the gaine. The second. period Orono seemed to show some tiredness, but with strong will and determination they scored three more goals. TIhey went to Alan Lacey, scoring twice and Derek Arnold. Assists went to Derek Arnold, Alan Lacey and Jonathan Burnhain. Cobourg came back to score again during the second period. In overtime Orono tried their best to score the winning goal, but Cobourg out maneuvered Orono and slapped in a great shot to win the gaine and the "A" Championship with a score of 5-4. Although Orono came away wîth second place in the "A" division, I feel I must congratulate each and every member and their goalie Jeff Goodmurphy, who played while under the weather, for a great effort they put forth.
