The celebration on Sunday had the ultimate co-operation of Mother Nature, as sunny skies and clear roads enabled a tremendous crowd- well over one hundred, to file into the Sunday School room at Newtonville United Church, along a receiving lie where Melville and Mary Jones greeted one and ail. If Newtonville was to have another name, it might very well be cailed, "The Village of Melville." This past Sunday, relatives, friends, neighbours, acquaintances and admirers came from far and wide to honour Newtonvilles Melville Jones on the occasion of his 90th birthday. Happy Bi rthday Melville! "Smiles and Chuckles" were everywhere for the man of the hour. Melville was bomn February 12, 199 1, i the very house in which he lives today. His father, William buiît the family home 133 years ago in 1858. It lias served the community through the years as a general store, liotel, photograpliy studio and telephone office. On display, were many, many birthday cards. There were old photographs, newspaper clippings and various other nostalgic treasures and notes of special events and auspicious occasions adoming tables for every to see. After an hour or so, Master of Ceremonies and friends, Frank Stapleton welcomed ail. An officiai birthday grtee'ting was extended to Melville, as Frank "went through 90 years in two minutes. .. summing up this wonderful man's life. As smiles and applause continued to fi the roomn, Frank introduced a number of distinguished guests i attendance to make presentations i Melville's honour. Among, were Mayor Hubbard, Councillor Diane Hamire, MP Brian Caswell for Ross Stevenson, also MPP for Durham East Gord Milîs representing Premier Bob Rae, and a representative from the Gideon Oshawa Camp who greeted Melville, wishing him life's best, and letting him know that ninety Gideon Bibles would be donated i bis honour. Rev. Bryan Ransom seemed to speak on behaîf of the entire community when he talked of Melville's kindness, support and devotion to the people of Newtonvîlle, and the Church. For thirty years, Melville- was treasurer of Newtonville United Church: for twenty-eight years lie was an Elder, lie spent thirty-three years as a Trustee and eight years on the Board of Stewards.
