12-Orono Weekly Tinmes, Wednesdaky, Marcb 13, 1991 At the Clarke Museu m Edwar"d As. Curtis showing Library would re-direct funcis for more books The- Clarke Museum and Archives is proud 10 present Edward S. Curtis Photographer: Reproductions of early 2th century photogravures contained in "The North American Indian." Here, Museum representatives Shirley Moffat (left) and Paulinie Stephenson of Orono greet visitors at the entrance to this fascinating, rather compassionate photographic. exhibit of North American Indian and Eskimo peoples. Edward S. Curtis, while stjîl a young man, nearing the end of the l9th century, recognized Indian tribal strengths and traditions had been seriously weakened by the expanding influence of "white" culture. He had a truly unique insight and desire to leam as much about the Indian as a white man could ... as no white man before him had ever done. Through his deep dedication, Curtis was able to capture rare and sensiti ve feelings of these people on film. He became one with them, and for thirty years, studied more dma 80 tribes west of the Mississippi and north into Canada. The best of Curtis' work was selected, assembled and edited into twenty volumes of photogravures and twenty volumes of accompanying text entitled, "The North Arnerican'Indian." This partîcular exhi*bit of 38 fta.med photographs taken from the North American Indian attempts to reproduce the photogravures with as much truth to the originals as possible, using advanced technology and materials of modem photography. The photographic themes include portraits, Orono Tree Nursery (Continued from page 9) served the nursery well il could leave the nursery stock in jeopardy at any ime. The new system will serve the seed beds and the transplant beds, all located in the western sector of the nursery. There axe two projects with the pump house at the Wilmot Creek along with pumping equipment and landscapes, forms of shelter, food gathering, costume and dress amongst others. The photographs are also an illustration of, the passion of the artist -photographer who dedicated s0 much of his life 10 the North American Indian. Edward S. Curtis wrote: "The great changes in practically every phase of the Indians life that have taken place, especially within recent years, have been such that had the time for collecting, mnuch of the material, both descriptive and illustrative herein recorded, been delayed, it would have been lost forever. The passing of every old man and woman means the passing of somne tradition, somne knowledge of sacred rites possessed by no other; consequently the information that 15 10 be gathered, or for the. benefit of future generations, respecting the mode, of life of one of the future generations, respecting the. mode of life of one of the great races of mankind, must be collectod at once, or the opportunity will be lost for ail timne. t is this need that bas inspired the present task." Edward S. Curtis, 'Me North American Indian, 1907 Through the eyes and camera of Photographer Edward S. Curtis, and fromn the worn faces of the North American Indian looking back, you will leave the Museum with a warrn, quiet feeling of the dignity and compassion consumed'in these photographs. "There is a spiritual and esthetic impact experienced in viewing Curtis' work. His was a romantic vision of the Indian, a romantic vision that changed the Indians view of himself. .."Smithsonian distribution lines estiniated to cost $650,000. The second project estimated at $545,000 will provide field irrigation. The total project is expec ted to provide 415'person- weeks of employment for workers. One of the features of the new system is a constant water pressure throughout. Production at the Tree Nursery has increased over the past couple of years from a figure of 5 to 5.2 million seedlings t0 6 t0 6.5 million seedlings. The Clarke Museum is open Tuesday t0 Friday from 10:00 a.m. t0 5:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and closed Mondays and holidays. by Peggy Mullan Susan Hendricks, chairman of the Newcastle Public Library Board, addressed council on Monday asking that a sum of $20,000 that was surplus capital funds following the completion of the Newcastle Village branch be redirected s0 that it could be used for the purchase of books. The chairman noted the need of at least another 1000 books for the Newcastle Village branch which currently has 3000 items which she said made the branch seriously understocked. "We have the space in Newcastle Village," she said and over the past two months circulation at the branch had increased by 5 10 percent. When asked about books for the other branches the chairman said the other two branches did not have room for further items. She noted that it was considered that a library system should maintain a collection of three items per person and that Newcastle was far below this figure at 1;5 books per person. The chairman said at the present ROTARY CLUB 0F BOWMANVILLE Trip of the Month Lottery time one-third of the collection is out from the libraries and that overail there bas been a 110 percent increase in circulation. As to 'the request council members referred it to budget discussions, where it was referred to the treasurer for a report. Counc. Hamre asked what progress was being made as to the Courtice branch to w'hich Susan Hendrick staîed that the board had decided to await the completion of the community centre complex in Courtice which would also house a library for that area. She said the board feit it would be costly to create a branch in Courtice now only to have to move later when the, centre was completed.
