She continues to show iterest in her community and its political activities. Layoff coming at Cameco, Forty-seven Cameco employees at the Port Hope uranium conversion plant are to be laid-off as of May 3lst. This reduces employment at the plant to 230. The layoffs are due to a downward trend in the uranium industry. The company will start to altemnate its operations between its two conversion plants. Semester system for Port Hope High The semester system will be introduced at the Port Hlope High school commencing in September Of 1991. The school board bas given their approval. The school is considering starting classes at 8:35 a.m. along with shortening the lunch hour to 50 minutes and closing classes at 2:40 p.m.. Buses will still leave the school at 3:30 with the extra timie being used for extra-curricular activities or getting additional help from teachers. Regional councillors b--te Seaton concern S. ome members of -Durham Regional council have expressed concerns over the provincial plans for Seaton Place in north Pickering. Labor council protests post office cutbacks The Durham Labor council opposes the privatization of post offices and is to pass their objections along to the Prime Minister. Bill Scott of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers said the closing of post offices does not maire financial sense. He said Canada Post plans to close ail 5,221 rural post offices and 734 town and city post offices by 1996. All services will bc shifted to private postal outlets, said Scott. Set garbage bag limit in two towns Both Port Hope and Cobourg have set, a limait of three garbage bags that may bc set out for pick- uip.1 The Port Hope plan goes into effect as of March 3lst. If more than three bags are placed at the curb those over three will be left and residents will have to store them for the next pick-up or take them to the town dump and pay a charge for disposai. Cobourg already lias its three bag limit, in force. Approve harbour front plan Port Hope has approved a waterfront plan that would include 300 boat slips, an open civic square and restaurant. Other commercial, residential and recreational facilities are included in the plan. The plan would be phased in over a 20 year period and put Port Hope in a competing position with the waterfront at Cobourg and other centres. 0 Minister backs-off municipal mergers David Cooke, of Municipal Affairs, has stated in a letter to Northumberland County that merger of smaller municipalities ia the new county system will not be forced. This was nlot the case with the former Liberal government who were calling for mergers of centres with less than a population of 4000. Cooke does cal for county level planning. Weekly fish derby on the Ganaraska The annual Ganaraska Spring Fishing Derby in Port Hope is underway having opened on February 15 and continuing for eight weeks. Parents would start own bus service Parents concerned in the Waverley area of Bowmanville over the lose of busing to the Bowmanville schools expect to start up their own bus service while the board of education carnies out a, study to determine if the route to school is safe, or not for walking. The busing service was eliminated after the board revîsed their distances for busing for both elementary aqnd secondary school students. Those living 2.4 kilomecters or less front a senior public school miust walk and those in high school living less than 3.2 kmn must also walk. Whitby hopefuls announice election plans Nine candidates have now registered to run for municipal election in the Town of Whitby. Bob Attersley is to again seek the top position,' mayor, a position he has held for ten years.
