-2-Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, May 15,1991 Further on being short-changed In last week's edition of the limes we editorialized on the Minister of Education, Ruth Grier, turning thumibs down to participate in a Canada wide test for students 13 and 16. Grier has used the excuse, and we believe it has to be an excuse, that the test would flot be fair to Ontario students due to cultural differences. The Toronto Star ini an editorial presents the interesting fact that Statistics Canada has compared the post-secondary performance of English-speaking students with students whose first language is neither English or French. The 1986 study found that 5 percent of Canadians whose first language is neither English or Frenchi are university graduates. The comparable figure for those with English as their first language was below the 5 percent make resting at 4.1 percent, almost 20 percent lower. 1Certainly we are being short-changed and it is somewhat disappointing that the NDP govemment that has no ghosts in the closets as yet did not take the opportunity so that taxpayers and students alilce could judge whether the educational system was stacking up to others. At astwe aPsay we have had our first ful ý'eek of beautiful weather. A waming to ah Owners Of animals, a rabid fox was ca ught at the "duck Pond" a short time ago, apparently on its last legs so its bard to say how long it has been roamning around the area, so keep your pets in and make sure tbey have bad their rabie shots. Do not let your chldren go over there alone. On Friday nighit driving west out of Kendal, 1 saw three deer cross the road and a fourtb stayed back until I bad passed. They are such beautiful animals and s0 many seem to get killed on the roads, these seemed street wise as we used to cali our cats ini the city. Wbat a beautiful day Sunday was, a perfect Mother's Day. Where did they get this Family day, Fatber bas bis day ail to himself, let's let Mother have a day of ber own, No one wears coloured flowers to show that their mother is still living and white flowers if she is dead. I beard a woman saying on the radio tbat Motber's Day was a day for mothers who had sons in the army. That was not my understanding and I think I bave been around a few more Motber's Days than ber. Now it is the day that children get baptized and then everyone goes back to motber's for a big meal. Not that I don't believe in Baptizing children, but let's let Motber bave at least one day that is bers alone. The Church Service opened witb dbe singing of "Part of the Family.". Following the Cali to Worship, tbe choir sang the antbem, "Tbis Child We Dedicate to Tbee." The Cbildren'sHynm was "Fatber of the Human Famiiy." For the cbildren's, story Bryan asked tbem, wbat is today, tbeyanswered Baptism and Mother's Day. He asked tbema what tbey did today to make mother feel special. He then brought out a pbotograph of bis family, and bis wife's family and asked tbem, if that were tbeir family, bow would they feel if one was taken from that picture, they said tbey would feel sad, w ould miss tbem, their kindness, tbeir teasing. Today is family day. The cburcb is part of the family, if one is absent from cburch we miss tbem. Baptism is the way of entering God's family. Comment... News that, g eneti c I.'researchers have made a dramatic breakthroughi in their field of medicine r-cently, gave me the willies as opposed to an ecstatic reaction. Pinpointing the single gene that changes a maie fetus to a female does not thriil me. With medical researcb journeying into wbat was unheard of years ago, sometimes just does not seem right. With test tube babies, becorning more and more common, yes - couples are able to bold on to their dream of becoming parents, because of research; but determining, or altering the sex of a child for reasons we havent beard of yet, 1 can't belp but wonder where it wiil end. Sounds an awful lot like "playing God" to me. Peggy Mullan, As the children are always interested in the Sacrament of Baptism, they were asked to remain in theclihurch for it. Keith Woods introduced the parents to the congregation. Rev, Ransomn then Baptized, Kayla Lynn Langstaff, daughter of Robert and Judy, Tanner Steven Foster, sonl of Glen and Hope, Ry an Wesley Wood, son of Don and Tracey, Bradley Andrew Zealand, son of Gamnet and Monique. 'Me Psalm reading was Psalm 1. Rev. Ransom read from Acts 8: 9- 13; 1 Corinthians 12: 12-31; Matthew 12: 46-50. Following the offering the Hymn sung was "Jesus Cali Us." The sermon was based on "Captured by the Spirit". Rev. Ransom told us, Virtues do not change. ibis momning we witnessed the Sacrament of Baptism, the hope, the courage, the love of faith, these are the same experiences of the days of Simnon and Philip, tbey saw words that changed life. Chiîdren make us to know love, hold our temper, make us aware bow close faith can touch us, to expose our children to life, is an awesome task. By bringing tbem to church for Baptismn we join with the Christian family. The church has many responsibilities, to hielp them to stay together, to support the family in tixnes of trouble, We, are al part of God's family. The service closed with the singing of "Now Thank We Ail Our'God." Announcemnents ... May l9th, Pentecost Sunday, receiving new Members. Remember . .. Living without Faith is like driving in the fog.
