Laidlaw makespitch to Joint commlittee Cheryl McCrinimon Bill and Cheryl McCrimmon opened up their Antique Shop seven years ago, wiUi Uic last five, including an impressive, very popuiar Art Gallery. Bill, a Metro Toronto Police Officer, and wife Cheryl, have longcd to operate their own shop for many years. Bill's father had a shop in Cornwall and the couple always seemed to have a flair for quality antiques and exquisite works of art. For twelve years Uey operated on a sraaller scale in Toronto - near Waterfront; but as boUi knew, there 'was nothing lilce an antique and art shop in Uic country. Pcrhaps as fate would have it, the McCrimmons learncd of Uis lovcly house, built in 1823, up for sale in Uic village of Newcastle. And that was Uic truc beginning of their dream. It took about four years to get Uic business going. There was a lot of renovating to bc donc, to add a personal touch. 11 Cheryl and Bill learned that Uic previous owners, from England, had had an antique shop in this very saine house for awhile; and also, one in Engiand before coming to Canada. Both were called "The Hollows." The McCrimmons have kept "The ollows" alive to iis day. Thcy have customers fron far and widc that know the shop by this special naine. McCrimmons Antiques on Thanksgiving weekend, 1990, was thc only shop in Durham Region to have Robert Bateman, in person grace their store. It was indecd a great honour for Bill and Cheryl to meet and visit with the "Artist in Nature." Along with an expanding antique furniture display, mostly pine and oak, McCrimmons offer a wide selection of Bateman, Trisha Romance and many more treasured prints and originais. They are second to none when itcontes to professional "museuin" framing, no job being too big or too sinall. Materiais used are standard for Museum framing; i.e. - acid free mats, backing and pockets, giving and maintaining Uic utmost care to the print. The McCrimmons have another store/shop i Port Hope, and Hwy. 2 and 28. Their son Todd and famiiy friend Steve Eldridge live in and operate this particular location. Todd's creative framing, abilities are unsurpassed. Quite frequently, throughout Uic year, Art auctions are held as well. McCrimmons hours are Monday through Sunday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Bill and Cheryl welcome everyone to stop in to say hello and to have a look around. Pullen said he was speaking to their application relating to the expansion project and not that of the infill proposai. He said he was bringing a status report to the committee on the expansion plan and to discuss the benefit of the proposai for both the Region and the Town of Newcastie. He said Laidlaw will bear al costs relating to the design and construction of an expanded sewage trcatment plant in Newcastle Village receiving liquid waste fromn the proposed dump. He said likewise Laidlaw would pay al costs of Uic force main from the landfill site to thc Newcastle plant and as wcll a proposed interchange on 401 and access road to Uic site. He said this was subject to entering into an-agreement wiUitUicRegion and Uic Town of Newcastle., Pullen stated that there was need for continued discussion with Uic enjoy life and turnes in Uic Village. Land Registry office to mnove from Bowmanville The Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations has notified the Town of Newcastle that on September 20th at 4:30 p.m final preparation for the integration of the Newcastle Land Registry Division office in Bowmanvillc will be completed and mcldcd with thc Regional Municipality of Durham Land Registration Division. The Ministry states that across the province existing land registration divisions are being brought into line wiUi other current legal and administrative jurisdictions.- The Bowmanvillc Land Rcgistry office staff and records are being integrated with thc Whitby Land Registry Office. The Ministry states several benefits including clients being able to research and close al transactions within one location. It is pointed out Uiat in most cases Uic offices being integrated are sial or in old buildings. The Province cxpects to save an amount of $1 million a year in operating costs and $8 million over the next few years in capital improvements. "That's My Moin!" Rob and Heather Griffi n own and operate ithe Village Laundromat and Cafe as well. Rob, also a teacher, has taken a leave of absence from his teaching position to stable up Uic couple's new venture.
