Homicides in Durham increase Five homicides have been reported in Oshawa City over the past five months. This is a noted increase over homicides in the Region for a full year which in 1990 numbered three, 1989 also three and i 1988 four. Hooper blasts town centre sight Counc. Hooper of Bowmanville bas stated that a vacant lot across from the Bowmanville Library, former Specialty Paper Products factory, is a eye-sore for the town and the owner should be forced to dlean it Up. Council has asked for a report from their planning department on the status of the proposed development which was approved last year. The owner Jayson Swartz is to address counicil members on Tuesday as te the status and future of the development. Herrema may seek another term Although a final decision bas yet te be made Gary Herrema is a likely candidate for Regional chairman for another termn of off ice. Herrema has been chairman since 1980 and is elected by members of council to fill the position as chairman. Breaugh says guzzler tax needs refining Oshawa MP Mike Breaugh states the proposed Ontario guzzler tax needs refmning. It is reported that a $200 tax placed on Oshawa-built Buick Regals and Chevrolet Luminas is unwarranted as they are not gas guzzlers and it would affect production at the Oshawa plant of these two cars. Possible Millbrook School closing An accommodation comniittee bas been setup by the Peterborough County Board of Education to hold a series of meetings concerning the closing of the Millbrook High School. The Board of Education has aiready voted for the closure. A sitilar committee was appointed in 1982-83 when at that time the Board was also considering closing thse high school but failed to do so after a report from the comniittee. Slim increase in school taxes The Peterborough Board of Education bas voted a 3.3% percent increase on average in school taxes for 1990. The rate is in keeping with other low increases both from school boards and municipalities. Millbrook to have Summer program With funding ftrm the province, the Village of Millbrook is to operate a summer prograni this summer for il to 15 year old cbildren. Noise gone by mid-June Aflantic Packaging, a producer of recycled newsprint in thse industrial area of Whitby, bas promised southend residents that an aggravating droning noise from the plant will be eliminated by mid- June. Complaints of the noise have been directeci for some time to the Whitby council who passed a resolution that the plant be closed between the hours of il p.m. and 7 a.m. on weekdays and Sunday night. Provincial park registration info The province of Ontario is again malting it possible to find out the availability of camp sites at their 53 Provincial Parks. Reservations can be made by phoning the specific park directly. Spring concert The Durham Christian High School are holding their spring concert of music on Thursday, May 30 at 7:30 p.m. in the school auditorium, north Bowmanville. The night features the choir, 40 piece concert band and a jazz ensemble. Jackman heads Museum network Mark Jackman, curator at the Clarke Museum has been elected chairman of the Durham Region Museum Network, an organization that was founded in January of 1991. Gail Sheridan of Scugog Museum was elected treasurer with Charles Taw of Bowmanville Museum elected secretary. 'Me Durham Network is one of 43 regional networks throughout Ontario working to improve all cultural heritage and arts related programs and services for the public. Kathy Guselle to speak at conference Kathy Guselle, chairperson of SAGA, is speaking at a two day conference organized by the South Lake Simncoe Naturalist Club on June 7th and 8th. The conference is to discuss avenues of drawing public attention to the deteriorating environmental quality of Lake Simncoe watershed and to follow up on the implemen tation of the 1982 Lake SimncoelLake Couchiching study. Kathy Guselle is speaking on the role of volunteers, "The Hidden Resource." 1The conference will seek prompt action by the province on the Implemnentation of the Lake Simcoe Environmental Management Strategy program. Housing starts down in Oshawa The City of Oshawa has been one of the hardest bit municipalities i the Greater Toronto area in new housig starts. Housing starts in Oshawa in April were down 35 percent from the previous month of April. Oshawa also bas one of the highest unemployment rates in the GTA. More non-prolit units for Whitby The provincial government is assisting with funding for 94 new apartments incluiding 42 rent- geared-to income units. The project is being sponsored by the Durham Region Non-Profit Housing Corporation. The project is to cost $94 million. College enrolmnent gains momentum Durhamn College enrolment was up approximately 20 percent in March of 1991 compared to a year earlier. Applications are a way up stated Gary Polonsky, college president. He said part of the reason was the recession with people seeking more education. Total enrolment of full and part time students at Durham was 41,000 in 1990-91 comparing with 35,000 i the previous school year. Oshawa expects regional headquarters The Mayor of Oshawa has stated that lie expects an announcement shortly as to the final approval of constructing a Regional office on City owned land at Bond and Mary Streets. Whitby will retain some of the regional headquarters while housing, health, social services, works and planning will move to Oshawa. 400 to 500 employees are expected to move to the Oshawa building. Gunman was Brookside escapee The 19 year old male who fired on two OPP officers in Peterborough area recently and then took Wrs own life was unlawfully at large from the Brookside Youth Centre for a period of eight months, He escaped while on a day trip to Presquile with staff on September 2Oth, 1990. Army exercises for Wesleyville Oni May 3l1st the Ontario Hydro Wesleyville site will be one of several locations used to hold military exercises.
