The People Agailst the ND)P Budget? Last ThursdaY, a&ound noon, 1 left the legisiature to do a few things at my offi@e during the lunch hour. As 1 was leàYing by the main entrance 1 saw a large gathering Of protestors outsî'de bearing signs claiming they wcre a group called "The People Against the NDP Budget." Over the past few months, I have seen several orgaflized protests at Queen's Park, but these jeering protestors ail îdoked some what différent than thé usual ones. They ail appçared to be well- attired i expensiVe suits. ManY had- Rollex wrist Watches on, that gleamned mi the bright mid-day sun, as they raised thei clenched fists in the air. Many hall those fancy thin fold-up telepholles in their hand. Everyone appear#d to be very well. nourished. None %ppe3re as if theY had missed any rfieals latelý. AIl of this caupeld me to question their cause. After ail, to protest anything one miist have a worth while cause. 1 then noticed that many of the prçOte5torý had blark ribbon tied arounll their arm. 1 approached one o f them, a short pudgy mai of about; 0, his eyes ablaze with anger, sweat running down the side of his cheeks, after ail it was i the 80's. "What's up 1 sgid?" "This NDP goverament is a bloody disaster," he said, almost running out'of breath, "we have ail had it with them," he added through black eyes closed to a slit - "we cant eamn money any mxore, they take it ail away i taxes." I turned away, and waiked slowiy down to Grosvenor Street. As I continued my mind wouldn't stop printing pictures i my brain. Pictures of dyig Kurd children in Iraq, without food or shelter. The horror of the typhoon in Bangladesh, and the millions left homeless there. And then, the face of a sweaty well-heeled stockbroker whe shoutcd out diat there was a ground swell of anger over the budget. I really hope that Thursdays protest was not of real people. MIter ail, shouldn't we be countig ail of our blessings here in Ontario, as we battie the worst recession since the 1930's. Thats the way I see it anyway. for LADIES andi GENTS Main Street, Orono 983-5333 921929 ONTARIO INC.
