Checking Your Main Machie Hi I'm Dave from The Works trolysis, cavitation and- mechani- Parts Center and would like 10 cal erosion. spend a few minutes with you The tractor companies don't talking about your main bread like any ofthîs 10 happen to your d butter miachine, your tractor! engine any more than you do and -Lets zero in on - the coolant ANTIFREEZE "I hardly look aI mine, and then only 10 check for level!" says one of my neighibours where we live. This unfortunately seems like a common approach 10 our most forgotten fluid. You've ail likely had the expe- rience of draining a radiator and DRIVE A KUBOT/ finding brown coloured "stuff'î coming int the paîT. My kids WHERE? The Oro would calliti "guck!". This colouring is the resuit of'W Y ots rust and is flot a good signi. It H ? t est definitely shouldn't be reused. ome That's why tractor companies haveý recommirended f'or years that WH EN? Saitu r the antifreeze be changed on a regular basis, every 2 seasons or so!_ WHO? Yoursel Even worse than the brown colour though is the damage il can be doing inside your cooling system. The radiator can be attacked and cause a wvhite corr- siofi o _grow on the ends of the cores - solder being corroded. This cani cL a big chmink off the internai water flow and require a commercial repair in a rad shop - boiling out and roddîng the cores. Also the cooling systemi er0- sion ofîhe exposed cylinder liners of a wet siceveengine has been a f * I major concern over the past it,,yeýnt. "Erosion can borie ighî throuigh a 3/8" thick liner", says our ertgines'man - allowing eth- ylene glycol 10 get to the inside of' the steeve causing serious engine problemns. The problemn usually starîs near the bottomi of the siceve where the seals arelocated ai-, a complex process of cc- have offered coolant filter condi- tiofier kits both as add-on and factory-installed 10 overcome this. The filter should be changed aI least annually as the inhibiter containing sodium hydroxide is used up. The chemical helps t0 control rusî and acid level while the filter takes ouI sniali abrasive pieces. The inhibiter is also avail- able in liquid form as a coolant condilioner andl can be added directly 10 cooling system-s with- oI filters. Donl't use both as 100 much can cause gummninig. Keep cavitation-causing bub.- bics down in the system by using a good pressure cap and keeping the system ful.
