Appreciation Night having attained the four hundred club. Queen 's Report Last week the Tories continued to hijack govemment business at Queen's Park. They have also prevented parliamentary comniittees from meeting. As a result, witnesses, some who have traveiledrgreat distances to corne and speak, have been told to go home. The Conservatives may still dislike the results of September 6, 1990, but the governiment did win a majority of seats (73 out of 130). In our parliamentary democracy that gives the New Democrats a right and responsibility to govern. We were not elected to bring abouta Conservative agenda. That is why the government brouglit a budget tha figlits recession. SThe Tories are draining the public purse of over $1 million per week - quite hypocritical for a party whose leader calîs himnself a tax fighter. Last Monday, the Govemment House Leader called on the Speaker to use his perogative to end the Conservatives attemapts to paralyze Q ,,e legislature.,The Speaker wil make his ruling on May 27thi. This past week, some constituents employed by G.M. have called me to complain about the Gas Guzzler Tax, and suggested possible job loss over it. The gas guzzler tax was aseti to encourage Ontario car bu yers to purchase fuel efficient cars by rnaking less efficient cars more expensive. For example the tax on some Jaguars is around $4,000. Less than 1 per cent of al vehicles assembied in Ontario are subject to tie tax. About 90 per cent of ail vebicles assembled in Ontario are exported from the province and are not subject to the tax. Pive plants in Ontario produce vehicles that are subject to the tax when they are sold in Ontario. They are in Oshawa, Oakville, Ingersoil, St. Thomnas and Brampton. Less than 3 per cent of the vehicles produced by any one of these plants are subject to the tax. Most fuel inefficient cars bought in Ontario are not produced here. Another issue has been the provinces credit rating change. This is not the first Urne this has happened. When the Liberal governent was elected in Ontario, treasurer Robert Nixon lost its AAA standing soon after taking office. There are no provinces in Canada with an AAA credit rating at this point in tirne. To hear the Tories scream about it one would presumne that Ontario mnust be alone, and on the brink of disaster. Recause of the budget 70,000 people in Ontario will still be working. If we had gone the ".restraint" route theyd be Once again the car parties.are over for aniother year, b.&t ý.ifoý the starting date next fali. The trophies were given out at the May lOth card party. H-igh score of the year was taken by Wayne Lowery with a score of 100, and 2nd high Dean Polley with a score of 93. The hidden score was taken by Dave Spencer, the draw was won by Joyce Stacey. SNow that the card parties are over, the Church Parades and the Men's Lodge supper are corning Up. If you wish tickets to the supper, contact David Thrower. The entertainument titis year will be the Mount Shilo Country Gospel Singers, we had the good fortune to hear themn at a supper in Eldorado, they are excellent. This event takes place on Saturday, June lst, 6 p.m. Kendal Church Parade; Sunday, June l6th, lunch to follow at the Hall. Corne out and support the Lodge and prior to the Service watch one of the longest active Pife and Drum Bands lead the parade through Kendal. On Wednesday, May 29th, it will be film night at the Hall. Lowery Orono Fire Calis The foliowing fire caîls were received by the Town of Newcastle Pire Department, Station 3, Orono, during the week of May 13. On' Wednesday, May 15, pumper 3 responded to a medical cail at 5626 Main Street between 9:52 p.m. and 10:08 p.m. On P riday, May 17, pumper 3 again responded to a medical call at 200 Station Street, between 1:29 a.m. and 1:.44 a. unernployed. By keeping people employed we will also have about $4 billion worth of irnproved roads, schools and public faciliies in the long run. Last Wednesday, Brian Charlton, the Minister of Pinancial Institutions announced a delay of the introduction of auto insurance legislation. Somne of my constituents have called me claiming that the governnent is not going to continue with govemnment auto insurance as planned. I can assure everyone this is a delay - and thats ail it is. There is no Cabinet dissension, split on the issues, retreat or backing away from our commitments. We are working to produce an insurance plan that wili be better than what we have now, that is more affordable, and that provides fair and adequate compensation to people hurt in accidents. That's what we have always promised and thats what we will provide. Till next week - be kind to one another.
