For sol-ne reason Ive neyer bad the 0pportunity to actually meet a bonie fide Private Investigator. My experience bas been limited to fictidflal-characters like San Spade or Mike Hamnmer. They always s(-emT to have cluttered-cubby hole offices in the seedy section of sonie big city and are raostly raffish-laoking types. Theprie r met didn' t fit the mould at ail. Oh, hie was rougli and tough al right. He'd been aroùnd. He'd been a P.I. for 40 years. 1'd seen it ail. But his lifestyle was totally dîfferenit from the u5ual movie or T.V. personalities yoki see. In the first place, lhe lives in a comifortable home ln the village of Southampton on the ghores of Lake Huron, and his office is in bis luxuriously furnislled den. His namne is Douglas Hopkinsofl. He's a tail, distinguished i0<dking man. On top of that, be's noW 70 years of age, whîch makes 'him Canada's oldest still-practinlfg Private Investigator! He cails his Compan"y Voyageur Investigations and lias 36 agents scattered across the counitry. Al are experienced la vriOus types Of lavestigative work. But these days Doug and bis crew are concentrating on what be calis biological Research Investigations. That lavolves nracing bird' mothers of those who were adopted, finding lost loves or jnvestigatiflg "Mysterious disappeâTances". Itles time-consuminig work. Doug uses computers, a fax machine and is frequently getting phone cails, Or making tbemn to fara)way places. He says Biological reseurch is mostly just constant intensivc digging. I wasn't always that way. Scattered around the den are relics of his razzie dazzle days when be Donation should be acceptable Northumberland MPP, Christine Stewart, has given a boost to the campaign by Deputy Reeve Harold Stevens to set up a systemn to ailow public donation-rs, to a municipality for public events. There's- a periscope, a white cane, bugging equîpment and a mannequin he calis "Doris". Thie mannequin camne in handy whien he was tailing someone. "A man sitting in a parked car wid' his girlfriend looks a lot less suspicious d'an somnebody sitting there by himself,," he laughs.
