A Postscrîpt to Environment Week The council memnbers of Durham Region, or at least the miajonity, wrote their own postscript Iast Wednesday and Thursday to the recently celebrated Environment Week. By the time the amendmnents to the new Regional Officiai Plan were oven it was the environment that suffered and those green areas designed to separate Whitby and Ajax wer e painted a total black with asphalt and concrete. Anxd the environment suffered i other ways over a plan that is to set thxe course for the next thirty years. Interpretation is the key word for the plan which we do understand was to be a wide brusix affect. It was developers' wishes for whichx #e wide brush was used and there is no limit to which any municipality would set as ta development. It wil affect the quality of life itixe lakefront for future generations., One could back to prior Region, 1974,wlien the province was promptig municipalities separated by green belt but as one would look ito the future that is a tbing of the past. And the counicil of the Town of Newcastle cari beg no difference from Whitby or Ajax. It is interestig that only a few months ago Newcastle's planning department presented a view of the future for the municipaiity and especially in the Bowmianville area. There was some restraint as to the extent of development. It only took council memibers one week to scrap the main tieme of the report and in the new proposed Regional Officiai plan development will extend ta Maple Orove in the west mnd to Bennett Road in the east. One could well ask just how soon Courtice and Bowmanville join. If you want to know ask the developers. We h-ave often asked ourselves what really is the purpose of a thirty year plan. Of course some planning for bard services must have leeward time but surely flot thirty years. They next stage of the plan wil be with the province and likely the Ontario Municipal Board. The it comne to the local municipal officiai plans - a time again when thxe pinstripes will be out in force. The next time letfs have a better "postscript", to environment Week. Corections 1We would like to make some corrections to last weeks edition of the Tmes. Inx an article conceming the horse show in Orono we had placed Elizabeth Ohixelihage as first overali for the show. This was in error as the Grand Champion rider for the over-all show was Laura Faul, Newcastle, ridig Sweet Temptation. She is a student of Susan Petch, Drumnmore Stables. The meeting in Tynone over the 4Ô7 Highway is being held Thursday, Jane 2th. lxIn reporting an auto accident in whiclx Brett Alldread was injuried it had been said the vehicle liad been reported stolen. We understand tdis was flot the case and regret the ernon. Old Tyme Feelingy (Continued from page 1) There are many featunes on which to browse in the store from antique reproductions, one-of-a- kind to a host of wliat one might calI country-styled gifts. They report it was very successful and wish totliank ail who baked for it and lielped out i any way, with a special thanks to Kathy Picco for al lien phoning. I understand that the service and picnic held at the home of the Dunharns was also a success. On Sunday, June 9th, the regular church service was held. Prior to the service Bemie Martin played thxe old pump organ, it was s0 nice to hear, this organ doesn't get used very often and it is stili in very good condition, but I guess no one wants to have to pump it. The service opened with the singing of, "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee.," Rev. Ransoni gave the Caîl to Wonship, the choir Comment. .. WHACK! We have seen the 1*Ih a m m e r icomîng. It was nice to see children out, even with no Sunday School, that way we alsd got to hear the childrens story. Bryan asked them if they knew what a mnap was and what do you use it for! They said it was used when planning a trip, when far away from home, when lost. ýHe then asked themn what else could they use?' They said,, signs, compass, sun and stars, ask somneone for help. To ask for help when lost is very important. In the Christian faith there are maps to hielp us, Jesus helps us. He drew us a map. The Scriptures are thene to show us the way, on our noad thnough life. The children's hymn was, *'Teach Me, God, To Wonder." The Psalm reading No. 57, Rev. Ransom read 1 Samuel 16: 14-23; 2 Corinthians 4: 5-13; 1 Mark 3. 20- 35. Pastoral Prayers were said for Audrey Hennessy, who is necuperatingafter surgery. The family of Cameron Langstaff, Mn. Starchuk, for the fathen of Robert Ransom, and for Pearl Clark who feil and broke lier wnist. Following the singing of "Christ is the World's Light," Rev. Ransom gave his Sermon, "Don't Lose Heant" this was taken from Cointhians, these words seem shallow these days, the words we use dont seem to make much sense to the person in trouble. Frustration is real to the one unable to solve thein problems. It takes a special moment, to give the support needed. We often feel alone and weak, but i those moments, there are people who come, or reachi out thein hands and give you support. There are moments in these times when we feel the presence of God. Paul's lesson in the words, Dont lose heart, is there always someone to reach out and assure us, to give support. Saul was instructed to go out and destroy 10 cities, lie needed someone toelielp him in lis anguish. God was there. How wonderful it is, to know God is there, to know that people are supporting one another. Like Jesus, ask, what do you want me to do for you. The closing liyxn was, "May the Grace of Christ." Dont forget next Sunday' is Foodi Bank Sunday. Also the Orange Lodges of Kendal will be attending ChIurch, and dont fonget Dea, Old, Dad, it is his special day too! Philosofacts . . .
