MMMJ 1 OrooW kITme Wdedy ptme4 19 From Around the Region Local municipalities support garbage fées At the Association of Municipalities of Ontario the Town of Whitby, City of Oshawa and the Region of Durham supported a resohution that the province provide legislation - in which local municipalities could adopt a fee- for-garbage pick-up. The chairman of Durham's public works comnmittee objected to the user-pay scheme stating that the garbage problem is a result of in- action on the part of the elected people. The scheme was supported by most urban centres while counicillors from rural areas expressed concern that their municipal sideroads would become dumping areas as residents objected to paying a user fee for the garbage they place at the curb-side. The Town of Newcastle now operate with asingle fee per household and forismail businesses. Great work for consultants The Greater Toronto regionial areas have expressed objection to the expenditure of $17 million for the search of three major dumps i the OTA area, one being in the' Region of Durham. The $17 million goes to 36 consulting firms who will be involved in the search. Many of the firms have already done work in the area for Regional councils prior to the take-over of the garbage disposai scheme by the province. In the end the final decision wil be a, pollitical, one and flot necessarily based on the findings of the consultats.
