The above hitch is that the grandstand this year at the fair on competition. of Ken Allen, Orono Saturday when a record number of 'Me three-horse hitch win went to a in thie G'arden I~ mv rr~,n Late August and early September hias always been considered an ideal time for lawn repairs and the rooting of perennials that one may wish te bring indoors over the winter as houseplants or as a source of cuttings to root in March. As to the lawn that'bare spot may well be best repaired in the fal with the sowing of grass seed which will be well established before 5110w brings its blanket of white. Germination in early September is such that the grass will be well established before snow brings its blanket of white. As such the repair w ill corne along withi the rest of the lawn in the spring when spring growth is most active. As to cuttings fromnthe garden time is running out to obtain those tender perennial cuts for rooting., If one hias special geraniums, impatiens, coleus or fuchiawhich- they would like to save as houseplants or to have plantings for next year the cuttings should be taken at this time of year. Four inch cuttings can be taken from the end of the branches to be rooted indoors. Geraniums root best in a non- humous material as horticultural sand, vermiculite or perlite. The others survive best in a mix of sphagnum moss peat and -sand or perlite Be sure to remove flower buds and cut away lower leaves before planting the rootings somne two inches deep in the rooting material. Always water from the bottom. Fluorescent ighting is excellent source of light for the plants but a bright window will do almost as weIl. The cuttings should becnt with a sharp knife or a razor blade for a clean cut and planted, more than one if desired, in a sterilized container. Humidity is an important, factor in rooting cuttings and can be increased by ýpulling ýa plastic bag over the rootings and container making sure the leaves do not touch the plastic. A coat hanger cari be used te keep the bag open while closed at'the- bottom around the container.' Once the rooting hias been established the individual plants can then be transplanted te their own pots in a regular potting mix. It generally takes up to six weeks for the roots te first develop from the cutting. Some prefer te take the original Plant from the garden, pruning it drastically and potting it te grow inside under lights or in a window. 104 KING ST., BOWMANVILLE SALLY STAPLES associate broker Enniskillen - $199,00 Need lots of room?
