A bit of this and a bit of that So we are on an environmental kick or at leasi that's what 1 had thought the fuss was ail about over the past two Io three years. "Reduce" was announced by the Ontario Minister of the Environmenî as the top R of the Three Rs earlier thi s year. Last Friday getting ready for the evening session at the Orono Pair 1 found that the razor blades in the cabinet had ail been used up. Not one could 1 find that would either cut or rip a whisker with the resuit that my face carried somewhat of a grey haze for the evening. Now 1 don't generally have to look after this purchase in the house but Saturday came and stili no blades. The purchase was made downtown, at Stutts to be exact, and I was preparîng for a real refreshing facelif t. First the pack of five were wrapped in a light card box - to throw away. The five blades were then containied in a plastic holder from which a single blade could be popped out - again to eventually throw away. To top it ail off each single blade was capped with a siide-on piece of clear plastic - to throw away. And of course the blade itself to be disposed of when its life was over. 1It makes one th ink of the plight of chewing gumn with its mnultiplicity of wrappers. To make things even worse 1 had to throw the whole thi ng away because the blades were not suited for the handle and there was no way 1 could put the packing back together. So much for that outing and in ýthe future Donna can make the purchase. Her choice is cheaper, and has considerable less waste. About the birds Its that ime of year when the warblers are on their way south and many are beginning to appear. The migration south is not as spectacular as the migration north when the birds are in their sumrner colour or mating colours. A warbler in the fali is a warbler no mnatter what species. 0f course there are some exceptions. 1 did have one opportunity of birding over the past couple of weeks during a walk in the bush niorth of Orono. The sounds of what 1 expected was a woodpecker was coming out of the foliage of a groups of trees which includedtwo sizeable white birch. As we were having some difficulty in fanding them amongst the leaves the best solution was to sit down and wait for the birds te make their move. It wasn't long before two juvenile Yellow Bellied Sapsuckers came into view and fiew up onto the trunk of the one of the white birch. Going further Up the trunk they stopped at their feeding station - some eighteen rows of holes that provided them with sap from the troc. It was quite evident that this feeding station has been in use for years with the outside rows of holes showing larger and apparently older. A Hairy Woodpecker entered- the picture for a brief âime period but did, not appear -to be that interested in the feeding station and moved on. We received a bonus while sitting there for possibly 20 minutes with the appearance of three Ovenbirds flitting around in the understory. These Sparrow si ze birds are inhabitants of the bush in the summer and are generally heard but seldom seen. Their cal is a rather shrill "tea-cher tea-cher" during the summer but at this time of year like most other birds they remain rather sulent, They live on the ground and in trees and shrubs up to perhaps fifteen feet. They nest on the ground. Its getting to be that time of year that the winter bird feeder could be installed thus perhaps keeping more birds around al year. We stili favour feeding the small black sunflower seeds in the hanging feeder an d scattering chieken scratch (a mix of cracked corn, wheat and some oats or barley). The scratch is feed for the ground feeders such as the Moming Doves and the Sparrows. A supply of water is always a welcomed addition for the birds for drinking and bathing. One important feature of placing the feeder is to have it close to some bushes or hedge in ordcr that the birds canu have some protection. Of course it hias to be far enough away that the squirrel cant use it to reach the feeder. Have a good faîl and winter with the birds. Christian Corner by Rev. Marg West How much patience do you possess? How do yoûi react in adverse situations? Are you able to control yourself when things don't go Your way, or do you fiY off the handle and give everyofte with ini the sound of your rather lônd voice a piece of your mmnd. You o)ught not to do that because in most cases we need ail the mind we have, without giving it away. Patience is the ability to keep our composure In every situation. Composure is a settled state of mind, calmnrss, tranquility (undisturbed). 1 Timothy 6:10-11 says that, "Christians should fiee the love of money (which is the root of ail evil) and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness." Money is flot the root of ail evil the love of it is. So we are to follow after patience. Hebrews 10: 36 says, "for we have need of patience, that, after you have done the will of God, you might receive the promise." Mfter we've donc what God has required when we pray, we need to have patience until we see in the natural, the results of what we have prayed for. Christianity is flot an instant walk we don't always sec answers to our prayers immediately, although when we pray, we believe we receive, and we do, but we need to have patience until we see our answers in the natural way.- Romans 8:25 says, "if we hope for what we don't see, then we wat for it with patience." We hope first then wait for the answer. Hope - Websters: A desire of some good accompanied with a belief that it is attainable. So as Hope is applied to our prayers we expect What we are asking is attainable, and if it's attainable we wait with patience for the answer. Comments or Questions. Write B ox 179, Orono.
