- Orono Wee)dy TIm*s Wednesday, Nvembr O, %U Elva Reid, Harvey Thompson and Helen MacDonald, co-chair the No Ganaraska- Dump Durham & Nort) team up againsi The Region of Durham and the county of Northumberland have agreed to jointly co-ordinate an aerial spray prograninii conjunction with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources to help combat the infestation of the gypsy moth pest. The gypsy moth caterpillar is one of the mnost serous defoliating- insects of hardwood stands in southemn and central Ontario. The programn is partially subsidized by the Ontario Minislry of Natural Resources. The administrative budget for the Region is covered 80% by the provincial govemmrent and 20% by the Region. The landowner cost for spraying is based on a sliding fee schedule of a fiat fee of $60.00 for the first three acres, an additional $15.00/per acre for the next 4 to 15 acres, $ 10.00/acre for the next 16 to 50 acres and $1 .00/acre for over 50 acres. These funds are applied to the direct spray costs with the balance also being picked up by the province. Northumberland County has been involved with the program smnce 1986 and is now experiencing a decline in the infestation. The bighest concentration appears to be i Hope Township, adjacent to the most eastern boundary of Durham Region. The infestation dramatically increased within the Region last year, prompting participation i the program. According to aerial assessments performed by Forestry Canada this past summner, there was 2,838 hectares of moderate to severe defoliation caused by the gypsy moth caterpillar. I 1990 the defoliation was only 567 hectares. Provincially the overail picture is worse. The infestation has now moved further west into the province and north into the Muskoka area. Over 347,000 hectares were detected with moderate to severe defoliation, the highest ever in the province. Now is the time for landowners to inspect their woodlots for egg masses which generate into caterpillars next spring. The new egg masses laid late summer and early fali are a beige colour, with a soft fuzzy coating, are firmn to touch and are about the size of a "loon' coin. Old masses are generally bleached out and have tiny pin holes where the caterpillars committee meeting at the Orono Town Hall last week. iiumberland ,gypsy moth emerged last spring. The masses can be found anywhere, mostly in sheltered places such as on the underside of branches, the bases of trees and under rocks and twigs. They will also be found on buildings, campers, lawn furniture, etc. Scraping the egg masses into a jar and bunming thein is an effective way to eliminate isolates sightings. Large scale infestations5 may warrant other more effective control methods. The damfagiflg stage occurs in the spl'ing when the caterpillars emnerge and start eating the leaves. The xiost preferred species are ail oaki', poplar, birch and willow. Aerial spray operations take place between May and mid June when the caterpillai reach a certain stage and leaf developmnent is almost full. The material used for spraying is BaciLlu hrnjn (Bt), The active ingredient of the spray material is a bacteriumn which occurs naturally in the environmnent, representing a natural or biological control of the insect. The insect must ingest the material for effective control. In order to qualify for the aerial spray programn the landowner must have a minimum of 10 acres of continuous vuinerable forest. Landowners may amalgamnate to meet the acreage requirement. Al areas are subject to a pre-spray assessment. The application deadline is December 31, 1991 and applications are available from the local Area Municipality Offices, Conservation Authority Offices and Lorraine Nors, Gypsy Moth Co- ordinator, Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority in Port, Hope, (416) 885-8173.
