Bowmanville trustee heads public sehool board Mike Slocombe, previously Vice-chairperson of the Board, was elected by acclamation December 5, to the position of Chalrperson of the Board. Slocombe who is one of two trustees representing Newcastle - Ward 2 (Bowmanville) was electeci at the Inaugural Meeting of the Northumberland and Ne wcastie Board of Educaion. Ini his acceptance speech, Siocombe said the new challenge facing the Board is the increasing number of societal concerns impinging upon the educational environment at the saine time as academic achievement becomes more and more important.: Moving to' educational financing, lie said, "The challenge is that we will be required to do more with less ini a time of rising expectations and diminilshing funds." Siocombe cited family violence, poverty and hunger as some of the issues the educational community now faces. Slocombe was first elected to the Board in 1980 and bas served on ail Board Cominittees including Education and Operations and Finance. He bas also served as the Board delegate on the Ontario Public School Boards Association. At the same meeting, Cobourg area trustee Judi Armstrong was elected to the position of Vice- chairpersoxi, again, by acclamation. Armstrong has been a trustee for the past six years and has served on many of the Board's Committees and has worked as Chairperson of such comnxttees as Education.
