A senseless act, The mail box outside Royal Lee's home west of Leskard is but one that over the past week bias been multilated. Letter to the - -1tor: Senseless and brainless destruction of mail boxes Lee asks those involved to ask themselves if they take any prido in their actions of such a senseless and brainless act. Councîl tables move to develop Officiai Plan The General Purpose Committee of the Town of Newcastle bas tabled for two weeks a recommendation from their Planning department that the, departinont proceed with Uic review and development of a new Official Plan for the Town. The review and development of the plan for the Town is to be undertaken by thc Town's planning departinent and expected to take a period of two years. The saine proposai was placed before the- former. cotincil in September of 1991 but was'referred back to staff for a subsequent report followin~g comments from the public. There was no furtber action on part of the former council. The issue came before thc Town conimittee on Monday as did views from a number of developers who made pleas Uiat their proposals not bc held up due to Uic process over the next two years. It was pointed out that the Ministry of Agriculture bad The dog days are over It was over three weeks ago that two Springer Spaniels came to the Forresters for an extendod stay while Zbeir owners were taking off for the southern states. It was rather a new exporience for Donna and 1 to bave two bouse dogs 'on the promises and in the bouse. There is quite an age difference between the two dogs sometbing like one year to fourteen - it's 1grampa and. the kid. But they both have Uic same droopy, sad oycs, floppy cars and short short somewbat pointod tails. It was plain that the wag had long left grampas tail but for thc kid it had five wags to Uie second., 1 often wondered what thoy were thinlcing when they would sit and placently looked at you. It was plain that your move was to be first. Just grab a coat and they wcre at thc door or at least Uiekd withdrawn their comments of approval of some of the developments until such time as a new Town officia plan is in effect. Kevin Tunney asked that the committee table the issue for two weeks and was supported for the tabling by other speakers. Tunney said he was aware of the decision of thc Ministry of Agriculture but felt that ho could have bis development, in the south of Courtice cleared witbin a two week period wiUi Uic Ministry. The planning departmnent stated Uiat Uic Town of Newcastle must now be brought into conformity with Uic now Regional plan. It was pointed out Uiat Uic Regional plan now includes less detail and that municipal official plan must now contain detail for development. The officiaI plan development is not to interfere wiUi developments that are currently in the process seeking approval. As well priority will be given to any commercial or industrial developinents proposals. was wbile grampa took stop by stop. Ycs we did got tUiom out to the Ganaraska a couple of times and on one of the trips grampa did provide us with a cbuckle. Ho got left behind on one of Uic hills and as we went over Uic crest and out of sigbt be began to bark and continued to do so until ho reached Uic top to mako visual contact., 1 would hamper a guess all the barking was "Wait for me, wait for me". Wcll onougb about Uic dogs but the reunion of the Picton arca family with their dogs provided some time to talk about their trip and findings. Now Jim is one that is a browser poking around in stores to soc what is new or what thc going prices for tools or wbat evor. A yard sale will attract bim evcry, dîme. As to prices in Uic U.S. versus Canada ho had to report that a compressor ho bas had bis oye on Senseless and brainless destruction and vandalism seems to be rampant in this day and ago. Last night I watched the television news and was saddened and shocked to see the mindless destruction of thousands of pounds of food that was contributed to help feed the needy and jobless in the city of Toronto. Only in Toronto you say. Not so! Certainly flot in the saine category of seriousness but this morning 1 walked out to My mailbox to discover that it had been smashed to smithereens by the saine type of brainless idiots that did the deed ini Toronto. Our Police stand no chance in catching this type of misfit, and misfit is the only word that I can find to describe these people. was priced at $299.00 in the soutbern States at Sears and bhe in, Canada $599.00. Likely from the saine plant suggests Jim. And thon doser to home but ini the U.S. ho, viewed contents in a furniture store to be told that the woodon kitchen furniture was made in Canada and it was Canadians that purchased-most of the wooden furniture paying less in the U.S. than in Canada. Ono would have to say that is bard to figure but Jim dlaims it to be a fact. But also browsing the family visited an old estate and former plantation where over 200 servants maintained only the home and grounds. Ho said the estate building is massive in frontand is often seen on somne television advertisemonts. But past the front the building is very narrow and rooms run out from the back in a long, lino with windows on, botb sides for cross ventilation. It was bult in a era prior to the invention of air-conditioning so cross ventilation was the only means of making tho rooms livable in the southern cdimate. With this we bcave the Picton family and turn to a rodent conversation with Bill Bunting. Somehow or ever the subject of a fonce viewer came up whicb brought a smie to Bill's face. He tels it this way. When hoe was a high scbool student in Pickering lie used to work on two adjacent faims.. The two neighbours nover did get along, in fact the relationship was rather bitter. It carne to a point when the lino fonce had to bc fixed botween the two faims and as there was nover to be any agreement between the parties a fonce viewor was brought in to settle the problemn of who built wbat portion of thc fonce. With this settled the one farmers built his section reacbing the mid point. The other was soon to reach the same point and was about to nail his section to the last post of bis neighbours. "You don't nail your fonce to My post". "Will you soUl me that post?" "Yes Five dollars". The transaction was completed and the neigbbour nailed bis fence to the post just purchased and then said. "Get your fonce off my post". And so it is and life goes on - which reminds me inm finished for this week. I arn further saddened to think that in these years of liardsbips for many that there are people roaming our streets and roads whose only purpose seems to be to cause distress to others. The only cure for these problems appears to me to be to appeal to the people who do these acts of destruction that they may take a look at tliemselves and ask themselves if they take any pride in their actions. Surely if they have the least thread of decency they would turn their energies to some activity that is constructive rather than destructive.
