Orono Weekly Times, Wednesday, February 5, 1992 - 9 Report from Queen'Park from Gord Milîs M.P.P. Durbam East Everyone 1 know bates moving and 'm no exception. Last Monday my staff and 1, spent the day packing everything up in boxes for our mnove to new offices on Bay Street. It was a deadly chore. Bright andi early on Tuesday morning the movers arriveti and quite swiftly depositeti everytbing from my old office on Grosvenor Street to our new location. The move was ail the more remarkable considering the office location in the heart of tbe downtown core, andi the fact that the offices were on the 25th and l7th floor of eacb building. My character is one of resenting change. I have neyer had a job of less tban fourteen years duration. It was with a degree of reluctance I left tbe Solicitor General after only 16 montbs, nevertbeless, my new position witb the Minister of Municipal Affairs, offers me a window of opportunity I would bave been foolish to decline. On Tuesday morning, 1 attended the community meeting at Tyrone Community Centre, in regard to tbe proposed "preferreti" route of the Higbway 407. I am looking forward to hearing the mninistry response to the alternate suggestions as put forward. On Wednesday evening, I represented the government at a dinner hosted by the Speaker of the Ontario Legislature, at Queen's Park. The occasion was to welcome the new Baltic State Consular's to Toronto. The conversation centred around the days leading up to the eventual overtbrow of the USSR in the Baltic States. The-behind-the- scenes maneuvers, as told by tbe consuls, would be the substance for a great book. On Tbursday, 1 spent tbe day on the Governmient Social Developmient Committee at Queen's Park. The Chairman of the Toronto Metropolitan Police Board, Ms. Susan Eng appeared before the committee and afterwards I had the opportunity to chat witb ber. I found Ms. Eng to be a warmn caring person, with a vision of policing that I must confess, I didn't quite expect. Ms. Eng bas been often assailed in the media as being totally unsuitable as the Metro Police Board Chairman. But then, hasn't Ms. Eng been unfairly treatedt trougb extension of tbe carefully orchestrated rigbt-win campaign against anytbing and anybody a a a even vagueîy pèrceived as being connected wi t t NDP, whatever their skills may b On Friday raprniflg, 1 was at Scugog Council for a meeting to attempt to work out a solution to an illegal1 tire dump, which continues to capse considerable concern to residents living on Scugog Island. jriday afternoon, was spent at Rogers TV Studios t aping the next iree editions of "Talking it over with Gord".,Tbe next three subjeéts discussed are, Big Brothers, Trhe Heart & Stroke Foundation and Ç-ommunity Care. Tune in, I'm suie you will enjoy tbe programs. If your opportuflity to meet with me bas bedfln delayed, please be patient. 'm Jloing my best to accommodate eý,eryone, but tîme demands are enormoUs, and I've, been plagued with a type of virus that saps my enc'XY* Se you next week. Council Briefs Prom debate at council over a pending Consultants report as to recreation in the town it would appear that the Newcastle Community Services Advisory Board, made of two representatives from each Ward may be on its way out. The discussion came up when it was pointed out that the Consultant's Master Plan would soon be releaseti to council. Mayor Harure stated i tat she had attended the Community Service Advîsory Board at their last meeting and they are flot to meet on a regular basis in the future. It was stated that the Advisory Board had compiled the list of grants for commnunity groups for 1992 and these would be presented to the 1992 budget process. Counc. Hooper doubteti that council would have enough guis to close-out the Advisory Board. Christian Corner. a a. by Rev. Marg West Love is tough. We like to think of love as being tender and sweet, gentie and kind, whicb it is, but I tink that wben you love someone you have to be tough in that love also. In John 3:16, "Goti 50 loved the world that He gave bis only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in bim sbould flot perisb, but bave etemnal life." I'm sure flot to the placewhere I'd give any of my chiltiren, yet tbat's what God did. I know, I know you're saying but He is God. Don't you think God bas emotions, feelings, we do don't we, aren't we made in the image of Goti? We have feelings and emotions don't we? I thînk that was tougb love. If we saw one of our children going to do something that would be burtful to tbem, would you stand back and watcli or would you intercede for them. Sometimes we bave to be frceful to keep them out of danger. We get s0 frightened at the danger that bas almost overtaken them that they sometimes get a sharp slap on their bottomns. Is that because we don't love them, NO that's tough love. I rcally love cuddling babies and infants, I love to see the ch anges that take place as they are growing the first smile, the tottering steps as tbey start to walk, the going etc. But believe mec there have been times when mny chiltiren wanted to do tbings that would hurt tbem andi I bati to be tougb. Did I still love themn, you bet 1 did. I was looking out for their good. Tbis principle does flot only apply to your househiolti. If we have a love for our neighbours anti frientis we'd do the samne for themi wouldl' We? If you see somecone in neeti you'd help, of course, that's love but it's not the same type of love that if you see someone who bas liveti with someone who is an alcoholic or abusive that's tough love. To be able to love so much that you stay with that person always hoping for tbe day tbat they will stop dinking or being abusive. In Romans 12:9, "Let love be, without dissimulation. Abhor tbat whichi is evil; cleave (dling to) tbat which is gooti." Love witbout dissimulation. Dissimulation: is to dîssemble. Dissemble: to conceal eg: (the trutb of one's feelings), under a false appearance. Let's flot be false in our &finition of love. God loved to the giving of His Son. Let's love flot only in deed but in'our conversation and actions, love, has already been purchased for us on Calvary. In John 3:3 Jesu said, "Verily, Verily, 1 say unto you, except a mari be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of Goti.",And in John 3:5, "Verily, Verily, I say unto you, except a man be born of water (natural bîrtb) and of the Spirit (accepting Jesus as Saviour) he cannot enter the kingdomn of God.'" If you do not accept Jesus as Saviour you cannot enter the kingdom of Goti. God made a way for us througb His eternal love, by giving His Son Jesus. I heard a saying a week or so ago 1 thoughit was pretty profound. 1 love you, but, 1 don't love you enough to go to Hell with you. You have to make tbat decision. God loves you andi I love you. Love is also being honcst one with another.' Questions or Comments? Write Box 179,'Orono. Watch Total Christian Television Cbannel 49, Buffalo. Joe Caruana, Director Community Services, stated that the Master Plan deait ehiefly witb Museum Boards, Libraries but did not comment on local hall boards. Deloitte & Touche, auditor s for the Town of Newcastle have offered their services for 1991 at a cost flot over that of 1990, a zero increase. The firm hati charged a 4% increase in 1988, 6% in 1989 and a 5% increase for 1990. The Town has rehired the firru for the next five years.
