The cost of transportation has a major impact on most people's budgets. Many car owners spend more on their vehicles than anything else except housing. There are two categories of automobile cost. Variable, or operating costs, include maintenance, tires, gas and oil. Operating costs are worked out on a per-kilometre basis because they increase with distance driven. The costs of ownership, or fixed couts, include insurance, depreciation, taxes' and licensing and registration fees. Operating costs are worked out as an average per kilometer travelled. Keep track of ail oil and maintenance receipts. To figure out gasoline costs, fill tank, and then keep an eye on the odometer. After you've gone 200 kilometres fi the tank agamn and note the amount of gas used. Repeat the procedure several imes until you can average the resuits. Armed with oiu, gas and maintenance averages per kilomàetre, you need only know what tires cost to arrive al 'IL* Fu~ u oprrating cxpcnscs. atyrtie cost an average .76 cents per kilometre. Then calculate total yearli' operating costs by multiplyingth average cost per kilometres you drive in a year. To figure out annual fixed cost, total the yearly cost of auto insurance, vehicle finance charges (if any) and licence fees. You still need to know your annual depreciation. To do this subtract the trade-in value of your car from the purchase price, then divde by the number of years youve owned the vehicle. Adding these together gives you your annual fixed costs. Once you have made these calculations for your vehicle you can compare the cost of ownership to the cost of using public transit and rental cars. If you are anything like me you prefer not to know anything more than you have te about costs of running your car. Personally, 1 think knowing the unknown isn't a bad option to consider about owning a car - just think if you had ail the answers perhaps it would stop you from sleeping soundly ' the way I see it.
