Congratulations. iNewcastle Little Brothers off to summer camp In speaking recently with Nancy Scott of the Town of Newcastle Big Brothers Association she stated that 14 Little Brothers from the umbreila of the association are attending a summer camp for a week. The boys wili be attending Camp McGowen which was developed by the Kitchener and Waterloo Big Brothers Association on lands that hiad been donated for the camp purpose. Nancy said that St. Johns Ambulance would be assisting in the transportation of the boys te the camp. There lias been a growing need for more Big Brothers in the Town of Newcastle te meet the needs of 12 Little Brothers now on the waiting iist. Nancy points out that registration by Little Brothers has been on the increase this year factoring the need for 12 more Big Brothers. She stated that response hadi been great in the past and was hepeful that the needled number of 12 Big Brothers could be reachied in the near future. A bit of this and that Last week we received a eall a t the office asking if we had seen any Monarch Butterfiies this year. I couldn't really say because 1 had not been looking for them but 1 did pose the question wo Bill Bunting and Bll Carman over coffee on Saturday mornig. They had the answer because they have the time to lay in bed reading the morning paper, a privilege 1 cant afford. 1Last winter in Mexico severe weather conditions destroyed 75 percent of the migrating Monarch butterfiies which has resuited in few coming back thîs spring to this area. Bunting explains that those that did survive do not have w fly 50 far north this year to find a territory for their food supply resulting in the fact that few will be seen here in Canada this summer. There is also the fact that some of the winter habitat in Mexico is being destroyed as it relates to the existence of the Monarch. 1No sooner had we finished with the Monarch than Bill Cairman made note of an item that a cemectery in Toronto was importing 300,000 Lady Bugs. The green grass in the cemectery was being devoured by aphids and the Lady Bugs find aphids a, most tempting dish so they are wo be scattzred about the cemetery wo eradicate the aphids. Bill Bunting then noted that such had happenied a lot dloser to home. The Orono Tree Nursery had imported something lîke 10,000 Lady Bugs (or was it 70,000) last year to undertake a similar job in the green house complex at the nursery on aphid- like flies. He reports it was a successful venture. "What happened to ail those Lady Bugs?" Bill always has a practîcal understanding of the ways of nature and came back with the reply that if the food supply diries up thc Lady Bugs would move on which is what happened through the opecd vents. Those that couldn't [mnd a new food supply would pass on to the- great beyond. This brings our Saturday morning discussion to the Town of Newcastle Namne Change issue. The two Bis said thecy had received the mail-out "What do you want to cail Home?" 1This brought up the question, "Weil what do you want to, cali Home?"I The reply "Town of Newcastle" from both and wîth a comment the question on the ballot was deceitful. Arriving home for luinch Donna was asked if we had received the "What do you want, to cali Home?" mail-out. "Yes" came the answer, "I have already fiiled it out". "What's the name of your home?" "Town of Newcastle", came the reply. "If Oshawa can get a second vote on the-Hilstone proposai surely I'm entitled to a second chance". The same question was asked Chris at work Monday morning and I further asked "Your response te the question". Without hesitation the repiy came "Town of Newcastle". One might ask "what does this do to the process?" Would a majonity of "Town of New- castle" responses negate the whole issue. What a fiasco we may have. t is fortunate that we cannot look into the future for if such could be undertaken look at al the excitement and expectations we would miss over the next couple of months. This ought to be something w hlive for. Just one more item for this week a phone cali from a reader in the 8th line area asking if we had ever seen a Black Biiled Cuckoo. "Yes we have on about four occasions over the past twelve or so years." The lady had made a positive identification as the bird had smnashed inte their window and ended its life. Last year we had two phone calis from the Kendal area of sîghtings of a cuckoo and one report this year of a cuckoo cal in the eveniings.
