Making mad dashes to the local stores for more supplies, trying to kecp in step when the drummer from the band behind you and the band just ovcr the fence are, keeping different beats. A big drop of water falling an your head and slowly running down your neck and back, and grand chaining as you march into the Fairgrounds trying to miss-the mud puddles . .. Apparently in I-reland they do a thing called Waltzing the Flag, this is donc by walking a few steps to the right and then a few steps ta the left, tîis causes the Banner or Flag to sway, this is how we rnisscd the puddles. 1 wonder if titis is how it aIl got started in Irelan d, they say it always rains thcre on parade day. A good day was had 1w' aIl and thanks t alal who participated. P. This would quickly become a lakeshore attraction ten stories high. To make this monument even more distinct, 1. W. A. (Interim Waste Authority), has omitted that there will be toxie waste included in die dump. The site intended for the Durham Region will be licenced te take Metro's surplus garbage. This was achieved by the convenient arrivai of the I.W.A.'s Ilurban shadow' concept. Curiously this termn was only defined in May, just prier ta the release of the "long list" of potential dump sites. This concept grants Metro the right ta develop or dump on lands lying in the "urban shadow". Sa what happened ta Durham's own regional plan that declared this whole area for permanent agriculture? The designs for the site include some staggering figures: 6 million, (yes MILLION), tans of garbage, 1 % of that being texic. That seemingly in significant 1% equaling 60 thausand tons, flot ta mention the ineyer eniding stream of trucks, flocks of birds, vermin, and leakage inta the ground water. This is truly mnodemn-day planning. I Wonder how the authorities spent the millions of dollars provided for researching this project. Perhaps the persan te ask is the Honourable Ruth Grier, MPP, aur minister of the Environment, who just happens ta be the sole sharehelder of IWA. 1 honestly find it disgusting that such a persan is in full power ta put inte, action titis inevitable environmental disaster. Southern Ontario's landscape is more than just beautiful scenery, there is a preciaus body of water ta be censidered, and extremely valuable farm land including specialty crops. One cannot farget the Canadian Geese either. Since se mucit of the waste in dumps is industrial why not locate the dump in an indu strial area. This weuld eliminate a major portion of the trucking and pravîde an excellent oppertunity for direct sorting and recycling. Industries which use incineration systenus fer heat and electricîty ceuld be linked ta the dump. Modem technolegy indicates that toxic ash is much easier ta deal with than the taxîc sludge found in dumps. In time chemicals could bc retrieved from dhe ash. Garbage and its subsequent disposai are seriaus issues. t gels a little scary when autherities like the IWA pretend ta have ail the answers. Sincerely Suzanne Holmes ATTENTION~ L OCAL, BUSINESSES!
