I I a,ý t - - ll , I Plan 55,000 sq. ft. plaza in Port Hope Jim Gilmour of Port Hope who operates a hardware store on the east end of Port Hope on Hîghway 2 has plans to add three separate buildings having a total 53,000 sq. f t. The downtown business area would be happy to see the plan not go ahead but are willing to discuss the issue with Gilmour with the view that accommodation at the proposed mall ot be such to affect the downtown area. Three ambulances still in operation It was proposed to reduce the number of ambulances at Cobourg from three to two as of August 4th. This has flot happened as of mid August. The service is operated by Lakeshore Ambulance who state that funding is not adequate to be able to provide three vehicles. One vehicle costs $90,000f annually to operate and the funds are just flot available. No final word bas been received from the province. (Continued page 12) The recent spill of 3,000 litres of tritium-laced heavy water into Lake Ontario bas sparked renewed concern of ongoing problemrs related to the operation of nuecear gYenerating stations in Durham Region. "Ontario Hydro basically has a license to pollute by dumping tritium into the water, and in the air", stated frene Kock of Durham Nuclear Awareness (DNA). Tritium is created during the cooling process in Ontario Hydro's nuclear reactors and can cause cancers, birth defects, genetic mutations and immune system damage. Recent studies by the AECB show Down Syndrome rates in the Pickering and Ajax areas to be considerably higlier than the provincial average. Cherrill Willard, member of Ajax Save the Waterfront Committee, is demanding that die public be notified immediately when a spill occurs at nuclear generating facilities, and that pregnant women be issued an advisory. "Long terin health effects of tritium spilîs will not be known for many years. but what about one year from now... monitoring birth defects?", queried Willard. The Canadian limit for tritium Motel may get new owner The Welcomne Court Motel and Restaurant which was closed more than a year ago may be successful in having a new owner in the near future. There bas been three unsuccessful attempts since the closure to close a deal for the 37- unit motel. The property was purchased for $ 1.45 million ini July of 1988 but abandoned in 1991. HELPING THE WORLD WRITE NOW CODE1 Self-sufficiency through iteracy in the developing worldi For iormation, oeil 1-800-661-CODE in drinking water is 40,000 bequerals/litre. The U.S. lunit is 700 bequerals/litre. According to Willard, the amount of radioactive tritium dumped into Lake Ontario during the one-hour spill was 2,333 TRILLION bequerals.. which is five times more than was leaked from the same plant in the whole year of 1990. As a precaution, the Ajax Water Supply Plant was closed down for several hours by the Mînistry of Environment (Ontario) on the date of the spill, August 2. The concentration of tritium in the drinking water supply peaked at 836 bequerals/litre - over 80 times more than normal background levels. "The new water suppiy plant for Ajax must be built as far away as possible . .. it defies common sense to locate it where the current one is (close to the nuclear generating station)", stated Willard. The current license for the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station expires October 15, 1992. DNA hias requested a public review of the lîcense under the federal Environinental Assessmnent Review Proçess. Under the process, there is a provision for AECB decisions to be automatically referred to the federal Minister of the Environment for public review by a panel: "if it is anticipated that public concern would be such that a public review would be desirable". Jeff Brackett of DNA, said: DURHAM REGIONAL, CRIME STOPPERS SOLVE A CRIME NEVER CIVE YOUR NAME EARN A CASH REWARD "There are a number of unresolved issues that must be addressed by a public review. These include e4quipment failures, unexplained heaith probleins, and most recently, the radioactive, contamination 0f Durham's water supply." Brackett critiéized the practise of non-notification of the public of nuecear gefleratiflg plant license renewalý. "The public is flot usually inv ited to express concernis, as in rezoning, applications," stid Brackett. The Darlinetofl operating license comnes uli for renewal on Novemnber 15', 1992. "The govemiment cani make up for its bad manners býý notify'ing the public of an ý)pportunity to express conc(,n in these instances", siated Brackett. Tritium front the Pickering and Bruce nucleaf power plants is, transported to the Darlington Tritium Removal Facility for reprocessing. This month's leak was a mattef Of unusual circuinstances at Pickering, stated Sue Stickley, Pufflic Information Officer at Darlington. "At Darlington, we ý,ould pick up a leak like this before it would get s0 high because we have newer technology, anid do manual sampling at evcry shift", said Stickley.
