It's ail in the rootsystem Gord's'Vîew~ Lloyd rietier us the jrono Tree Nursery inspects stock sample of oak with Gerorge Elgar of the Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority at the Stock Viewing Day a: the Orono Te Nursery last week. The Oreno Tree Nursery iast week was host to a Stock Viewing Day whicb aise included information as te proposed changes in mhe ordering systemn for nursery stock from the four nu rseries in southemn Ontario. The information day was attended by those purchasing trees as customers and by the growers from the four nurseries at Orone, Kemptviile, Midburst and St. Williams. AIl four nurseries bad samples of their stock on display at the ,Meeting being presented to inform the audience of what was available at the four centres. 11At the presenit time orders for treesý are accepted at ail four, nurseries, a practice that will continue mhrougb 1993. In 1994 it is tbe intent that Midburst wil become the main ordering centre for southern Ontario and trees will be available for pick-up at the four nurseries. At tbis period of time Orono and Kemptville will become the major seedling production centres. IlIn.speakîng witb Lloyd Pfeffer of the Orono Nursery he said there were some 14,000 over the couniter sales transacted eacb year at the four nurseries. Tbe over tbe counter sales will continue at the Orono nursery in the future. The Orono Tree Nursery expects to sbip somne 6 million seedlings in 1993. 1 always had my doubts by Gord Milîs MvPP Durham East In mny younger years, I often mnused that wben I reached the age of receîvïing tbe "Old Age Pension" there wouldn't be anything ieft. My worst fears suddenly scemn to b taking on real meaning. In report recently publishied in England suggests die days of equal state support for the elderly could be numnbered. The report produced by the Carnegie Trust, points to massive changes ahead. Like our own, Britain's population is getting older. Over tbere at mhe moment it takes 100 workers te support 33 pensioners - by 2030 they will bave to support 42. So if pensions are to stay at the same level relative to earnings, taxes and pension contributions would bave to rise sharpiy. Tbe report points out mhat not ail pensioners are poor; Britain like Canada, bas a well-developed system of company pensions which means that many older peopie retire on generous benefits. So tbey may flot need the state pensions - even though they have paid for it. The burden that-an aging population puts on those that work, tbe report says, directs a shift towards "ýmeans-testing.",If that sbift bappens, better off "Third Agers" - the Inew English buzzword for seniors - weuld get iess return for their contributions than tbey paid. At tbe present timne in Britain, women receive thecir Old Age Pension at aged 60, five years before men. Tbe Carnegie Report suggests that equal pension ages will bave to be achieved at the expense of women, because tbey retire carlier and live long-er tban men. It isn't just Britain tbat wil face a pcnsions-related cruncb in the years to corne - it's an international problem. Last week, the German Minister of Economies told bis people to work barder, and warned mhat the normal retirement age of 65 sbould be raised. In my opinion, Canada like Britain and the rest of Europe, is sitting on a social time bomb. Our aging population means that bard choices are just around the cerner. The future looks bleak for eider workers. Most firms are likely to argue mhat older workers are less productive, bave less relevant skills, are iess trainable, so mhat money spent training them is money down tbe drain. Companies often use early retirement as a way of cutting the workforce. If tbe pension cruncb does reacb Canada, our present attitudes towards the older worker wil bave to cbange - the way I sec it.
