The fact-of the matter is the international economic impact of gaming is huge and its growth seems assured as gaming activities expand around the globe.- Wagering in the United States atone is est imated-to be $220 billion annually. About $50 billion is wagered in the European Community. Employment, tourism, entertainment, ancillary services, manufacturing and regional economic development associated with gaming activities add many more billions of dollars to the total economic contribution of gaming to countries around the world. Ontario is not alone in recognîzîng the importance of the gaming industry. Casino gambling is currently in operation in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Limited casino operation are, also in operation in Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland. Some say that casinos give few emnployment opportunities. The Foxwoods casino on Connecticut, just opened February 15, 1992, employs 2,300,and is already considering hiring up to 500 more staff. The audience enjoyed the renditions of the Clarke Senior Band at the beginning of the exercise as well as throughout the program. Short words of welcomie were expressed on behaîf of the students by Jason Major, on behiaîf of the school by principal Hugh Hubbs, on behaîf of the Board of Trustees, Mikec Siocombe and by John Reid on behaîf of the senior administrative staff. Siocombe spoke of the experience of the evening for the students who are retUrning for the exercise and that such an event making everything worthwhile for the board of trustees.
