Congratulations girls, you deservcd it. Look out Tier I. Newtonville ini the U.S. Reading the financial page of the Toronto Star reference was made to a company in Newton- ville, Mass. U.S. that is involved in a merger with a Markham company in Canada. So it comes to pass that, Newtonvile, Town of Newcastle, has a sister community in the United States. -An uniexpected treat It was intended that last Sunday was to be a day of rest and birding was the last thing that was geing to bc on the menu. It started out that way. But after a couple of trips around the bouse and the morning Star read time was beginning to hang heavy. But that was solved with the repair of a couple of outside doors at the office and sealing the doors '--with weather stripping. It was ail in preparation for the winter winds - a task that should have been undertaken some years ago. 1 was quite plc-ased with the results and then the job didn't ast that long. WVhat about the rcst of the day. Birding did cross m-y mmnd but that had been ruled eut on Saturda-y se why not forget il just for once. As there, was a picture to take at the Museum in Kirby but it was twe hours away. Take a trip up the new 115 Freeway, north. It is some impressive, $100 million, to see Uie expanse of Uhc project and our sight-seeing reached Highway 7. A turn te the west and to Cavan for a coffee. What a bussling corner with two restaurants open. lis not much of a jump back te 115 and Kirby but instead we headed towards Bethany. There was nothing in Bethany we reaily wanted te sec se why net take off east and eventually wc wiil reach 115 again. To say the least it was an interesting drive, up and down hill, around curve after curve and with most of the road well wooded on beUi sides. And then Uiere were splatterings of estate residential homes tucked away ,'mongst the trees. Although Uie _istance between 7 and 115 can't be that far it did make for a considerable number of miles jaunting east, nerth and sometime, 1 would think south. Even passed through a grouping of housing with a road sign, Forest Glen - neyer heard of it before and likely couldn't find it again. It was a well painted sign - net an amateur approach te Uic work. Rounding a tree-bound corner, there infront on the road were at least 75 smail sparrow-like birds. Of course it was a stop and the birds turned eut to be Purpie Finches with both male and femnales present. if it had been a single maie bird P'm sure there would have been some difficulty in mnaking a positive identificationi. But with the femrale present with their dark face patch ined above and below withi the stripe of white the identification was eaUsy. The Purplc does breed and spend Uic winter in this part of Ontario but is net that often Uihat one has the opportunity te see thcm and se many at onetie Many of the birds do travel south for ic winter. Eventualy we did sight 115 and made our way te Kirby for a picture at the museum - the printing of Christmas cards by Mark jackson. Leaving Uic museum we were travelling over thce ver-pass te reach the south-bound 115 lane when from behind a Red Tailed Hawk sweop down in front of the car travelling about three feet above Uic road and Ianding at thc side of Uic road some 300 feet ini front of us. 'Me hawk poked its head inte a small meund of snew and came up with a meuse or mole - flew te a guard-rail pest wiUi Uic rodent caught in its beak wherc it was then clutchcd in its claws for a trip to a nearby hydre pole. It was dner-time for Uic hawk. Ken dal Hall Ne ws by Phyllis Lewery On Wednesday, December 2nd, Uic men of Kendal L.O.L. 405 met at the hall. You just neyer know what may happen when you jump or roll out of bed in the morning. As to the pictures at the Museum and those taken at the Rebekah bazaar its another story. Everyone has been fouling up on pictures at the Times this week. Ryan ran a doubt development takc on the negatives of the above while Carol Ann muffed it in loading her camera with ne advancement of the film for the events she had attended. We just can't always be perfect.
