8 OrnoWeklyTIm, Wdn~dy, .mbe O~199 It used to be, as the old song predicts, that there was only twelve days of Christmas. I was neyer entirely sure of when that first day of Christmas was. Did Christmas start on Christmias Day and then run for the twelve days following? Did it start on Christmas Eve and then run just long enougli to encompass New Years as well. Or did it start twelve days prior to Christmas Day, and then end with the big blast of pipers piping, ladies dancing, maids a-milking and a partridge i a pear tree. Whatever the case may be, there were twelve days. Only twelve. Witb only twelve days, it was impossible for Christmas to begin in> October. These days as soon as the Thanksgiving decorations cone down, the Christmas trees are lining the mals; Christmnas flyers are littering our mailboxes, proclaiming this to be the biggest pre-Christmnas sale of the century; and people have begun to rush around saying "Oh my Goodness, 1 only have 128 days to find that perfect gift for Aunt Martha". For me, October is just to early to worry about Christmas. It is flot just the fact that 1 anm a last minute pressure kind of person. It's just front personal experience, if I get that old Christmas spirit too soon, by December 12.-..1Iarn a Serooge. Ba Humibug, let's just get this hoiday over with. 1 enjoy shopping for the perfect gift. 1Ieejoy trimming the tree, and inevitably crashîng into it head first eacb year. 1 en joy the sights and smells that cone with eacb Christmas season. But I1 ie it in December. Now that we are well into the moý 'h and Christmnas is getting nearer, the Christmas spirit is cc'ming. 1 arn experimenting this year. 1 ignored all the pre-season hullabaloo., the lights, the trees, the flyers in the mail. And because of this I'm flot completely disgusted with the season. Christmas is my favorite holiday. Always bas been, always will bc. But this grand marketing plot drawn up by some unknown advertising wizards that neyer corne out in the daylight, lessens the holiday. At least it does for It seems that for many of the larger department stores and chains of stores, the Christmas season is merely a time to cash in on people's generosity. With the big stores leading the way it is necessary for the smaller sbops to follow suit. By the end of October we have on our hands.... Christmnas anarchy. Charlie Brown said it best when lie exclaimed into the night " Good Grief", while banging his head against a tree, in bis Christmas special. Christmas bas become s0 commercial. And on top of becoming more commercial each year, we are forced to endure the commerciality and the mockery of the holiday earlier and earlier. For me now seems to be a good time to let that first hint of Chrstmas spirit shine through. If it is flot too early for you, lIl wisb you the be-st of the season, glad tidings, a Merry Christmas, and alI that other stuff. P.S. Only two weeks of shopping left.
