Hockey Update Wednesday evening at the Orono arena thc OMHA Novice team played gaine two of the playoff scries against Woodville. Following a sound defeat in gane, one, Orono was out to prove that they could play on an even basis with this teain. It didn't look good early as Woodville surprised Orono with a quick goal just fourteen seconds after the opcning faceoff. Our boys could have wilted at this point, but to their Credit they fought back and were rewarded late in the period as Jamnie Rowe jumped on a rebound off a shot by Justin Standeven who had been set up on a pass froin Collin Cu reatz. Woodville rcgained the lead before the period cnded but this didn't bother Orono as Matt Reid lied the game in the first minute of the second, assisted by Justin Standeven and Jamie Rowe. Woodvillc rcgaïned the lead midway through the third pcriod and then despcrately tricd to hang on to Uic victory. Jeff Thompson passed Uic puck to Jake Bonnetta in the corner who in turn auempted a ecaring pass in front of thc net which bounccd in off of a Woodville defender to tic the score. It looked very much like overtime until Woodville scored wiUi just twcnty-seven seconds Ieft to take the victory in the gaine and the series 4 to 3. Orono boys showcd tremendous character to corne back and play thc way they did and displaycd a lot of potential for Uic future. Saturday wc travellcd to Little Britain for a tournament. The first game saw us up against a good skating team from Scarborough called Malvern. This one was a vcry close battle until thec middle of Uic second pcniod when Jamie Rowc gave Orono thc lead assisted by Collin Cureatz and Matt Reid. Somc good defensive play held Malvern off the scoreboard Uroughout Uic gaine. Early in ic third period Orono increased the lcad on a goal by Kyle Moore assistcd by Tyson Gimblett and Brandon Hiîls. In thc final minute of Uic gaine Brandon His scored into Uic cmpty net assistcd by Jeff Thompson. Lwc Alui n he icOrono goal was full value for Uic shut out as he made several key savcs including a breakaway after Malvern had pulled their goalie late ini Uic gamne. -Our second game was against a major novice tcam froi Oshawa. This was a tough battle froin the start as Oshawa took a Uhiree goal lead in the first period before Justin Standeven scored assisted by Matt Reid with just one second lcft in the fîrst period. Collin Curcatz brought Orono close early in Uic second pcriod as ho scored with a good shot froin the s101 after acccpting a pass fromp Justin Standeven. Orono played well Uroughout ic gaine1 but just could not keep up to the bigger and faster Oshawa squad as they scored four goals to take a big lead before Kyle Moore scored unassisted on an excellent shot to the corner late in thec gaine. The gaine ended wiUi Oshawa on top 7 to 3 but Orono played extremecly well for the complete tournamnit and can bc proud of their effort. We now look forward to a series of exhibition gamies before our next toumament in Uxbnidge. major takes it on chin in double tournie loss Thursday, January 28th saw Major Plumbing drop a 2-1 decision in BRHL Atom exhibition play against Family Trust. Scoring Major's lone marker was Greg Shetler on a nice solo effort. Saturday, January 30Lh Major playcd 3 gaines in the BRHL annual tournament held at Darlington and Bowmanville arenas. In ail, 16 teains participatcd at the Atoin level wiUi "A" and "B" Championship games played on Sunday, January. 31st. In game 1 our guys locked horns with a strong Peterboro entry sponsored by Canada Dry. Going with just 8 skaters, Canada Dry scored first and hield on to edgc Major 3-2 in a hard fought fast-paced contest. Scoring for Major-were (1) Andrew Beacock assisted by Paul Landers and (2) Greg Shetier assisted by Br-andon Caruana and Andrew Beacock. Gaine 2 saw Major coast to an 8-0 win over a much weakcr Port Pcrry entry. Major's goals were scored by Andrew Beacock (2), Brandon Caruana (2), Greg Sheitier, Clint Hawkshaw, Jonas Bonnetua, and defencemran Greg Bester (with is first of the season!). Major's assists went to - Greg Shetier (2), Corey Tufts (2), Jonas Bonnetta, Matt McGlynni, Andrew Beacock, Brandon Caruana, Shawn Ferguson, and, Paul Landers. Gaine 3 was Major's best effort of Uic day highlighted by a 3 goal performance by Gircg Shectler. In Uiis encounter Major squared off with a feisty Port Hope club. Major's Qreg Shectlcr opened the scoring in Uiceimiddle frame unassisted at 13:32. Less than 1 minute later Port Hope lied it at -L. Greg scored agaîn unassisted at 7:45 only to have Port Hiopc's Tyler Elder tic it at 2- 2 just 4' minutes later. Greg complctcd his hat-irick withi just 31 seconds remaining in the second, howcver with assists froin Andrew Beacock and Greg Bcster, Major grabbed a 5-2 leati earl y in the third-as Jonas Bonnetta potted 2 on the saine shift with Brandon Caruanal and Matt McGlynn sctting up both goals. Port Hope replied with 2 more late in the gaine, but it wasn't enough as our guys hung on t0 a 5-4 win. Major then advanced to the "B" Championship gaine on Sunday, January 3lst agaînst Pizza Pizza losing a heart breaker 2-1 in the second overtime pcriod! Major's ]one goal of tic Orofio J&M custom Framing, Tyke News, On Friday, January 29thi, the J & M CustomFraming Tykes extended their winning streak to five games in a, row, overwhelming Durham T.V. by a score of 10-0. ChrisMoffat led off the scoring for Orono, assisted by Tyler Gregg and Nathan Adegeest. Chris Moffat went on to score two more goals to earn his first hat-trick of Uic scason. His second goal was assisted by Jesse Price and Nathan Adegeest. Nathan Adegeest played a solid game as shown by the three unassisted goals he notched. Kyle MacDonald scored two goals, one of which was assisted by Tyler Gregg. Curtis Robinson and Kienan Williams roundcd out Uic scoring for J & M Custom Framing Tykes with one goal each. Kyle AlIlin and Jordan Beacock boUi deserve a special mention for Uic strong gaine thcy playcd. The best surprise of thie game was Uic outstanding job donc by the Orono goaltender, Stevic Gregg. Stevie is unquestionably the smallest player on the teain, and he appeared dwarfed by the net and the goalie equipment. Nevertheless, he made several exceptional saves on hreakaways by Durham T.V. to earn a shiut- out. Dufferin Aggregates collect another big win- On Friday, January 29th, Orono's Duffenin Aggregates Tyke tea m came u p agai n st Bowmanville's Deighiton Assoc., Bowmanville coming on real strong 'In the first shift. Orono taking a hlte whlile to get it togethecr Set loose withl Matt Caruana scoring threec unanswered goals at the end of the first periodi. Bryan B3iekeil stiarted the second period off withi scoring two goals,. Jeff Mercier hlavinlg a great gaine assisted with one of thiese. Matt Caruania scored another unassisted goal in the second period to gîve Oronio a 6-1 Iead. The third period started with lots Of excitement when Evan Moore scored his first career goal, with Jeff Mercier and Matt Caruana assisting. Bryan Biekeli scored shiortly after to give himnself a hat-trick Of the garine with Kevin Martin giving great assistance. Orono 'not Ietting up on theo second period was scorcdby Greg Sheîtler assisted by Matt McGlynni at 3:09. With Uic score 1-1 Uic two teains battled Urough a scoreless third frame and again through the first 5 minute overtimne period as Major pressed in Pizza Pizza's end to get the wînner, but were Uiwarted bv Ulic goalteniding heroies of' Mike Luxton. Finally at 3:27 of' the second overtime period, (and playing with no goalies) Pizza Pizza initercepted an errant pass in Major's defensive zone and winger Jain Forsyth redirected iit int the empty net for the win and Uic chanpionship! It was a tough break for Major as they clearly outplayed their adversaries in ic latter stages of Uic gaine.
