Mo re 1by Helen MacDonald The biggest, and most practical, investment my parents made in the education of my siblings and 1 was the purchase of a set of Encyclopedia Britannica. Raising six children on one income was not easy. Family field trips were few-and-far betwçen, se, the encyclopedia was our door to wider learning of the world. Toda-y, few families invest in home encyclopedia. Libraries offer more sophisticated, more up-to-date research material, and, now educational videos have become a popular learning' tool. But, one of the. greatest oversights mnost of us make is that we have the makings of an encyclopedia a short train trip away . .. Toronto. Last Friday was a Professional Activity day for local teachers; consequently, it was a day for my children to step into the living encyclopedia we visit 'the city'. We decided to visit our favourite place, the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM); but first on the itinerary, was the recently re- opened Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO). The art gallery and museum of my childhood were net always child-friendly. Children like te touch things, they like te squeal with deliglit as a discovery, they like te 'experience' the adventure . . . not bu silent observers in a dark, gloomy cathedral of ancient, moldy/mothbally untouchables. Now, as mnuseumns and gallerie s of the '90's strive te attract the 'entertainm-ent' dollar of fmle te their fuind-Squeezed insittiosthey are making a child's eýxperIence more interesting, more user-friendl. Upon arrivai at the AGO, there is a giant Henry Moore sculpture. It was surrounded and filled by drifts of snow which made it alI the more interesting. Kyle and Garrett were thrilled, after the long train ride, to climb the snow, touch the Henry Moore, and sit inside the curved bronze. Even before entering the AGO, they had satisfied their need to squeal, touch, climb and 'expecrienèe' the work. The first gallery we visited. was, of course, the Henry Moore gallery. To its credit, the collection of sculptures includes miniatures which show how an idea became a great piece of art. There were also treasures collected from the natural world which inspired the artists' work. . . driftwood, shelîs, branches, stone, etc. The galery runs a video about the life and work of Henry Moore, giving visitors a more intimate connection and understanding of the artist. Kyle was awed by the use of tools of chice . .. not brush, canvass, and paint, but hammner, welder, chisel and grinder. Carrying notebooks and pencils (no markers or crayons, please), the boys had a great time trying to 'copy' various works ... Henry Moores and Inuit stone, bonie, and ivory carvings which tell tales of ancient follore and myths of the spirit.world. Before taking the subway te the ROM, we walked for a while in the sujnshine throu gh Ch-inatown. Different sounds, new smells, different sights. Garrett noted: "there are so many different colours of brown face". The highlights of the ROM were the shark display, the bat cave, and the dinosaur gallery. Bats and dinosaurs have a mystical attraction, but the, shark display was the hit of dhe day. In its efforts te demystify the fear surrounding sharks, the ROM uses the hand-on, approach, humour, an d history to tell us what littie we really know about sharks.
