The snow is fia deterrent for the irds for it is generaily the case that snow docs abound whcni the first sigbting of the birds are made. It is now but a matter of driving along the back roads ta find smnall fiocks of Horned Larks as tbey scarcb for weed seeds alang the road side and in fields where wecdts are prevaient. CryNoM'ore Driving intoToronto last Wcdn)esday morning wc were reminded of Uic NDP bashing that stemxmed from some Regional cou nillors, letters ta the editor and an editorial in the Oshawa T imes. Nat a penny was dirccîetcd ta ic Region aiDurhani. Lcaving Orona shortiy prior ta 7 a.mn. we miotorcd aiang through Oshawa, Pickering, Ajax with case The other week, 1 was given the opportunity ta speak to the Rotary Club members in Bowmanville. During the open. Question period that followed, one member said that business was leaving Ontario for the U.S. ini large numbers, and the overail cos. of doingbusiness in Ontario were the highest in North America. A comment was also made that asked how much longer our government could remain at the helm, givig these grim statistics. At the time, I questioned the accuracy of that statement, promising to corne up with the real story. I have done that, and 1 thought I would share my research with the readers of my weely report. Contrary to the spread of doomn and gloom, by ultra right-wing critics, recent investments in Ontario have been as follows: Ford Motor, Company announced that it is goig to spend more than $2-billion in Oa.kville and Windsor to build minivans and light trucks. General Electric Canïada Imc. announced plans ta invest $144 million in its Oakville plant ta produce two new advanced technology energy efficient lighting produets. Glaxco Canada, Inc. have begun construction on a $70 million manufacturing plant in Mississauga. Sandoz in Whitby bas investedl $139 million ta build a state of the art centre ta produce Thereaflu a cold and flu remedy. Kraft General Foods Canada and it wasn't until we reached White's Road that traffie began ta baek up and slow dawn ta a crawl. Fîfteen or twenty minutes of slow gig. But then it opened up and I would have ta, say that ta the Don Valley it was what 1 would expect as normal travel and it was alsa tbe case travelling south on the Don - packed but maving along at a reasonable speed. What amnazed me the most was the fact that once in-downtown Toronto it was easy driving - no backu.ps andno line-upis. We reached Elizabeth Street, north of thc parliament buildings, with case. Th'is brought My thoughts back ta the NDP bashing, foi flot spending funds for roads and public transit for the Durham area. It also reminded me of findings from a recent study in whîeh itwas found that traffic into Metro fmom the Durham area, had increased by five percent over tme past four years wbile from tbe west into Metroaa wbapping 117 percent over the same period. The report also noted that traffic witbin Metro itself was not a great pmoblemn and that Metro residents were increasing their use of public transit. The big problem is west of, Metro according ta the report, and as such why wouldnt the manies bu spent in that area. ht is flot thai 1 would want to make thc trip on a daily basis but it is flot as bad as 1 have hecard nor lcad ta believe. Cry no more - leCs bu reasonable. annouinced that il will bc spending $35 million at its plants in Scarborough and Cobourg. Du Pont Canada Inc. announced that it will spend $55 million on new machinery at its Kingston carpet factory.. Hostess Frito-Lay will invest- $12 million ta expand production at its Cambridge plant. Caca-Cola Bottling Ltd. will build a,$20 milan warehouse in Scarborough. Uniroyal Goodrich Canada ncý. announced that it would invest $100 million ta modernize its Kitcbener South site manufactuing plant. Gates Canada Ine., and auto parts manufacturer, will spend almost $20 million to upgrade its Brantford facility. Eli Lilly Canada Inc. will be investing $170 million ta expand uts Scarborough operations.. Binney & Smith makers of Crayola crayons bave cbosen Lindsay, Ontaria, over their plants in the U.S. ta increase production by 4 million boxes of crayons. Inter-City Produets Corp. makers of Keep-Rite industrial equipment, decided ta shut their plant in Red Bud, Illinois' an d shift production ta their Brantford, Ontario plant. UCAR Carbon Canada Inc. have announced that the parent campany is clasing operatians at their plant in Tennessee ta shift production ta Welland, Ontario. International Source of Ergonomnies Ltd. bas consolidated uts production of office furniture in, Mississauga and closed its facilities in Atlanta, Georgia. The reasons for their decision is given as higher quality of -labour and more flexible suppliers. Kooshies Diapers, a division of Diana Dolîs Fashion Inc. closed a plant in Texas and consolidated production at its Stoney Creek, Ontario plant. SAil the above companies could have closed their Ontario production plants. Instead, all cboose ta invest and consolidate in Ontario. The ailier argument put forward was that business taxes were the highest in North America. My research bas proved that statement ta be incorrect. The combined statutory corporate income tax rates for manufacturmng in the U.S. states near ta Ontario are: New York - 39.9%; Ohio - 39.9%; Illinois - 38.3%; Michigan - 35.6%; Tennessee - 38.0%; white in Ontaria the rate is 35.35- the lowest. On Wednesday evening, I travelled up to Barrie ta appear on a local television program, "Provincial Affairs". This live, telephone caîl in program, prompted considerable discussion on many of the current issues, such as casinos, destreaming and apartments in bouses. I'm looking ta include this format in one of my own upcoming TV programs on Roger's Cable TV.1 My weekly, Queen's Park report for the next two weeks will address the -April budget. I will be frank about aur options, what I sce happening, and the effects of tax increases and program cuts. I hope ta hear from you about my comments on the budget. Until next week - Speaking abou.t the budget, Harry S. Truman once said, "I neyer give. them bell; I just tell them the trutb and they think it ih bell."
