All proceeds from Newcastle CLG Update by John Veldhuis The Newcastle Cornmunity Liaison Croup is presently looking at "Health & Safety Consideration and Concerns." We have to look at all the regulations and Acts that govern the- safety of the workers on the site as weil as the residents of the site. We have a large number of regulations to examine and document and we are presently going through those documents to see whîch parts of the Acts and Regulations apply to the activities to Decommissioning the Port Granby site. We will have public meetings, where we welcome and invite you~ to participate and. indicateyour concerns about Health and Safety and we will document these concems and certainly workç them into the final recommendations 'for Councîl's approval. We also wil the tournament wilI be usedto purchase assistive devices, suclh as environmental aids and wheelchairs, for adults with physical disabilities. For tickets or sponsorship information, please caîl Denise at the Ontario March of Dimes York/Durham office at 853-0393 or 434-5280. be looking at the protection of the workers and will be Iooking into the aspect with a great deal of careful attention to terrns of contract, performance, bonuses and bonds, penalties, standards, and conditions etc. We hope to prepare to report for your consideration s0 that you may have further input into the whole process. Nothing that we corne up with is final. WE are simply at the first part, we are at the start of a long process. Thee is time for your input, however, you mnust provide your input along the way to be meaningful and therefore participate early and your concernis will be dealt with right.from the beginning. We will present all of our reports for your consideration, for the Town of'Newcastle Councls approval and input and for implementation by the Siting Task Force. This task, ike ail the others, is not an easy one. Just consider the protection of the workers, what should that be? How should they be protected? What kind of protection wiil be provided? How often will it be rnonitored? What will be done with the information that has been collected? These are ijust some of the questions'and only a very few of the questions that have to be-deait wifth. When we corne to the residents, we want to make sure that nothing escapes frorn the site to influence the nearby residents in any negative way. WE are going to be monitoring a series of things, including the air, water and the soil. At the end when everything is completed, we should end up with a community and a site that is cleaner than it has ever been without hazard of radioactive or toxic materials being in the vicinity. We should therefore have an improved condition and improved environment for ail that live there and for future generations. This does not corne about by rnagic and therefore' the process' continues. Your opportunity to have input into it and to give us your concerns as well as your questions and suggestions is now. -Use the uWalint Ads in the Orono Times Just a phone oeil away 983-5301 1O UR CK HILDREN t IS ALL YEAR ROUND J a son looks forward to bis visits withthei( Easter.Seal nurse.
