OPP investigation Port Hope Police Chief Ron Hoath last week received a long awaited report on an Ontario Provincial Police investigation of two members of his police force. He hopes to give the police board an interim report on his review and decision on the matter in April.' The OPP investigation into allegations of criminal misconduct agamnst two officers was concluded in late December. No charges were laid. The names of the officers and the nature of the allegations against them have not beeni made public. Hoath disclosed the investigation was reiated to the local department' s probe of a highly publicized murder in the town in 1978. If Hoath decides that ither oif thc two officers should face charges under the Police Services Act, an internai hearing will be called. If the officers wcre found guilty, the presiding officer would also be found guilty for meting out the punîsîment. Bus deficit threatens, tax freeze A deficit loss of $1.1 million for Oshawa Public Transit in 1992 could bc the cause of failing to arrive at a zero point in taxation in the City for 1993. Agree-ment reached between Board and teachers The Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education, has reached an agreement with the teachers' unions, and will bc cornmitting to a 50-50 cost shaning package for an assistance program. The programn provides an employee assistance plan much like an insurance plan. The teachers are given access to their services and they promise immediate access to counisellors. Teachers are facing added pressures brought on by a changing society. These teachers have been inadvertently herded into the roles of parent, disciplinarian and psychologist. As a result, problems can arise fromn these pressures and display themselves in a varniety of ways - emotional and physical illness, or drug andi alcohol abuse. Talks are stili going on between union represenitatives and school board officiais regarding the assistance programn. It is the hope that an agreement will corne in the next few months. Durham Christian school wins long battie Durham Christian School in Bowmanville lias finally réceived the right to give two credits for Christian courses offered in grade 9 andl10. After the 12 year hatle with the Ministry of Education, Durham Christian and seven other high schools have earned the same riglit that Catholic Schools have had for years. The credits can be used towards completion of requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. Tests at Port Hope Welcome and, Port Granby' Radioactive waste *sites in Port Hope, Welcome and Port Granby will undergo- drilling. work in the next two weeks, in an attempt to update information about the material buried there. Scouts Canada bingo probe >The root of a probe into bingo fundraising by Boy Scout leaders in Port Hope and Cobourg is financial accountability. ', A $66,000 trip to Britain, taken by local Scouts and Scout leaders has neyer been properly documented. -ne probe was launicheil after it was revealed that five area groups had used namnes associateil with Scouting to raise more than $70,000 from bingos in Cobourg. Scouts are forbidden to raise money through gambli ng. Scouts, Canada has threatened legal action if the Cobourg groups did not change their narnes. The groups have since complied but are contmnuing to hold bingos. Local jobs at Ministry transferred to Oshawa Six jobs at the Port Hope office of 'the Ontario Transportation Ministry have been moved to the Oshawa Office of the ministry. The move was the resuit of recent administrative boundary changes within the mninistry's central regiorn. The driver exaniination. centre will, however, remain in Port Hope. By centralizing the district office Oshawa, the minîstry feels it wilI bc able to provide better services and cut costs. Hope Township to name roads Hope Township counicillors are preparing to sit down and attempt to choose names for some roads in their municipality. Andrew McNeely, a Captain of the Township Fire Departrnent has the responsibility of plotting the roads with the suggested names on a map. The map is to be presented in a few weeks. *Before the final decision, counicil has to decide if there is enough money to finance the project. McNeely says he is not sure how many roads need names, nor how many suggestions have been received. The name suggestions have been based on surnames of pioneering families, a landmar k or community, and things such as vegetation that grows in the area. Port Hope high goes green Students and teachers at Port, Hope High School are taking part in a program called Society, Environment, and Energy Development Studies (SEEDS) for the ý92-93 school year. The prograin enables students to com plete environmentally related tasks on a classroomn or individual level at their own pace. A total of 100 projects must be cornpleted by June for the school to receive a green titie and banner.
