.........a.h 4, 99 Dufferin goes two of three at Beaverton The players and families of Dufferin Aggregates traveiled to Beaverton to enjoy tbeir last tournament of this hockey season. The boys enjoyed a weil organizcd and entertaining day. Ail six tcams were guaranteed threc gamnes, win or lose. A skills competition of stick handling and goal scoring piqued everyone's interest throughout the day. Dufferin's first match was against Little Britain Bruins. The Dufferin boys maintained a 2-0 iead into the third period but reiinquished two goals in a minute and thirteen seconds early in the final. An exciti ng ending was te ensure after Orono's Matt' Caruana regained the lead for ýOrono. Little Britain pressed during thc final minutes but the strong defensive plays of Brandon Beers, Dustin Wcagant and goaltender Brian Pisani insureti Dufferin's 3-2 win. In their second match, Dufferin faced off against the Haliburton Huskies. After two periods of play both teams had iogged three goals -apiece. The last ten minute period of stop time saw Orono log four goals to thc Huskies' one. The Haliburton team cimbed to within one, with haif a period remaining. Dufferin put the game away one minute later and added an insurance with just seconds remaining on the dlock.1 For the "A" championship game Dufferin Aggregate came Up against Woodville. Orono' s opponents opened the scoring late in. the first after Dufferin were unable te clear their zone. Due te the outstanding goaltending of' Woodville's netminder, they kept, Dufférin off the board. Midway through the second, Woodvilie scored three goals in quick succession,. one while shorthanded.'Orono's recruit, Brandon Beers, on a fine solo Major Plumbing win tourney in busy schedule Mon day, March lSth Major Piumbing Atoms of the BRHL traveiled to Port Perry for a 1 day tournament. It proved to be a most successful journey as they earned themnselves the "A" Champs trophy! In gante 1 Uiey squeaked by a stubborn local Scugog Lumber team 3-1. Scoring for Major for Brandon Caruana (2) and Matt McGIynn with assists to Grcg Shelter, Mark Fletcher, Clint Hawkshaw, and Matt McGlynn. Game 2 was Uic boys best tearn effort as they trounced Pickening's Wildwood Ford 10-3! Major's markcrs were scored by Matt McGlynn (3), Brandon Caruana (2), Greg Shetier, Jonas Bonnetta, Paul Landers, Mark Fletcher, and Andrcw Beacock with assists to Greg Sheter (4), Jonas Bonnetta (2), Andrew Beacock, Brandon Caruana, Matt McGlynn, and Mark Fletcher. Game 3, The championship match-up, saw our guys square off with Orono's oid crosstown rivals from Newcastle! This was a lively, highly cntcrtaining contcst as both teams battled to a 3-3 tic. after :cgulation time had expired. Sudden death overtime was implementeti to decide a winncr, but after 2 more periods Uic score remained unchanged! As per tournament rules the third overtime period commenced. with just 3 skaters a side and no goaltenders! Finally just a minute into thc play Major's Greg Shetier broke up a Newcastle scoring threat at bis blueline, raced down Uic ice and dcpositcd Uic puck into bis opponents' empty net for the win and the championship! Major's other taliies were by Mark Fletcher and Greg Shetier. What miade this tournament se rewarding was the 100% participation as well as the total effort shown from Uic boys. Well donc! Tuesday, March l6th Major visited Bowmanvilie arena for a league match with Carnation. Major exhibited a solid effort as they skated away with a 6-2 victory. Major's goals were scored by Matt McGlynn (3), Greg Shetier, Mike Knox, and Kevin Francis with assists to Grcg Shetler (2), Corey Tufts (2), Mike Knox (2), Matt McGlynn, and Greg Bester. Thursday, March 18 saw Major sneak by Pizza Pizza 3-2 in an exhibition encouniter at Orono arena. Defenceman Paul Landers claimcd his first wmn of thc scason as a goaltender, in his flrst outing as he took a turn between the pipes. Al Uic scoring for Major. was donc by Matt McGlynn as he registered his second hat-trick in as many games with assists to, Grcg Shetler and Mike Knox. Saturday, March 20, Major ran into a tough and determined T- Mac team as Uiey went down to a 5-3 defeat in league play in Bowmanvilic arena. From a noticeably depleteti Une Up, Major's scoring was donc by Greg Shetler, Brandon Caruana, and Shawn Ferguson, with assists to Kevin Francis (2), Mark Fletcher, Mike Garlick, and Greg ShetIer. Winding down a busy week, a road weary Major Plumbing team squarcd off with teatu Geranium Sunday, Match 21 in Bowmanville arena, for their last regular season match. This gaine exhibited ai Uthc earmarks of a playoff encounter as both sides playcd a tight checking aggressive style tbr9u.gbout Th1e gamne ended in 'a 1-1 draw. Scoring Major's lone marker was Brandon Caruana, assisted by Ciint Hawkshaw andi Corey Tufts. In a 20 league gamne season scheduie, our boys faired pretty weil boasting a 13 win, 5 loss, 2 tic record and now worse than second place 'in the standings! Congratulations boys -- weli donc and good luck in Uic playoffs! Ncxt gamne for Major Piumbing is an exhibition contest Thursday, March 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Orono arena. Sec you there! effort, notched Duffefin's first goal at 3:54 with a fine shot to th glove hand side. The final ten minute period had both teams exchange a pair of goals and the game ended in a 6-3 loss for Orono's Dufferin Aggregates. Congratulations a re extended to Brandon Beers, Kevin Martin and Matt Caruana who represented Dufferin after advancing from the> stick handling portion of the skills contest with the fastest times. The three compctcd in the sharp shooting contest against the representatives of the other participating tournament teams. Matt Caruana proved to be the contest's most adept scorer; he netted the greatest number of goals during the timcd one minute contest. DufferiAggregates humbles Eiders The boys of Dufferin Aggregates shattered the confidence of some dozen fathers (Eiders) who were foolish enough to take up the challenige--this Friday past. A merciful scorekeeper did flot accurateiy track this iopsided fiasco. The aged Elders tried to skate with these young Bobby Hulîs (sorry wrong generation make that Brett Huils) but they just didn't have the legs this night. Some first time goal scorers for Duffcrin shone this night. Colin Maitland was one sucb with a fine breakaway goal that had the Eiders desperately diving and panting to return to the play. Another first time scorer was Brian Pisani who cashed in on flot one but three to make a natural hat-trick. An excellent effort by Matt Mitchell produced a spectacular goal. After a finesse rush from behind bis own net through -the entire Eiders' team and pounded the puck past the fumbiing Elders netminder. Other goals were added by the tanned and rested Bryan Bickie, Jeff Mercier and others too numerous te count. The Eiders did somchow manage to get the play out of their end and into the net of Dufferin. Chainsaw Bangay with bis long tangled Jenny Grcenteeth - like hair showcd bis adeptness, with the wrong end of a stick while rushing from end to end.
