Orono WeekJy Timos, Wednesday, March 24, 199~ -7 Harvey _Frederick Partner Mo re by Helen MacDonald On Saturday, the Shiloh U.C.W. held one of their occasional Progressive Euchre fundraising evenings at the Hooterville home of John and Pat Windatt. About three dozen people played some neighbourly hands of Eucbre, shared numerous variations of storm tales, and caught up on local gossip (oops, 1 mnean news). The U.C.W. served a tasty late- night snack, and we congratulated the six high-scoring players. 1 was not one of themn, but 1 neyer expect to be. You sc, I attend these for the visit, flot the game, and would rather chat with my table companions than count tricks. I dont take Euchre seriously, and have as my only excuse cultural deviation. I was flot born with a lone hand . .. in fact, I thought everyone had two hands,' until I moved out to Hooterville. When my family moved to the country nearly twenty years ago, 1 got my first real exposure to rural life. 'Til then, 'the country' was where we went for Sunday drives. Farmn machinery was as foreign as space equipment, a cow was a cow, flot a Holstein, Jersey, Black Angus, Charolais, or any of the other breeds. And, manure was manure . . . 1 had no idea that il, too, came in different 'brands'. But one of the most curious elements of country life to me, then a teenager, was the entertaifiment. No movie theatres. No neighbourhood swimming pool, library, l;owling alley or shopping mail. And, no bus system to get me into 'town, to search out the bubblegum, hotspots. What did local people do? It wasn't long before I found out. They played Euchre. My parents taught their children how to play Old Maid, Solitaire, Poker, and a Polish card gaine called ,Thousand'. But Euchre? .After a few friends taught me the basics, 1 went to my first 'Euchre Party'. 1 thought a crowd of people got together, played a couple of hands, lone or otherwise, visited with each other, laughed, c1y-tted, had a general pleasant ci.- ng. But around these parts, Euchre is very serious business. SApparently, most of the more serious players had predeceased my arrivai, but Ive heard a grunt or two from some of the still remaining cantankerous types. For exainple. NEVER renege. it's a capital offence. Don't make it red if your partner turfis down red. Don't trump your partner's ace. Always know what cards have been played . .. otherwise your intelligence is seriously, and ruthlessly, called into question. Neyer, neyer, neyer turfi down a bower. But, dont pick up the night bower, if ail you have in your hand is the left. Otherwise, you will lose both hands! No table talk: "I'm picking it up for you, partnr, and no excessive chater .. . especially if you have to keep asking "what's îrump?" No winking, and no footsy. No visits to the outhouse. Who knows wyhat kind of cheating mischief you wil get into there? Euchre last Saturday in Hooterville was a pleasant and inexpensive night out ... thanks to the Shîloh U.C.W. And, 1 still have two hands --- in spite of myself! Funeral services were held last Thursday for Harvey Frederick Part'ner, 68, who has been a prominent and well-known figure in Orono and district.
