In this segment there is very littie to write about. Guess people were taking it easy last week. Oshawa General opens cancer clinie The Oshawa General Hospital has opened its expanded chemotherapy and palliative care clinic. The new chemotherapy cîii will allow the treatment of 12 patients at one time, which is twice the former capacity. In the past four, years the number of, outpatient chemotherapy visits to Oshawa had doubled to 4500 per year. The new clinic will be able to handle 6000 patients. Durham to mark 2th Anniversary The Region of Durhami is ini the throws of planning a 12-month bash for 1994, the 2Oth anniversary of the Region of Durham. A special committee of the Region are hopeful of support from community groups to pla n events for the years. A calendar is to be published with ail anniversary activities and a "Bike Tour de Durhamn" is also being consîdered a possibility. Bank of Montreal to locate Port Hope The Bank of Montreal expects to open a branch in Port Hope complete with drive-through services. The branch would be located in the east end of the Town in the area of the Hancock Hardware existing business is located and where Hancock expects te be able to undertake some major expansions in the near future. TMe CIBC is also considering a new branch in this particular area with similar services, as drive- through. Bowmanville museum opening The Bowmanville Museum opens its doors for 1993 on Thursday, April,4th and has pianned the officiai opening for Sunday, April 4th, 2 to 4 p.m. with the special opening of the Marion Wiseman Gallery at 2:30 p.,m. Forest Centre offers x-country skiing The Ganaraska Forest centre has been offering groomed and track- set x-country ski trails this winter which have been in excellent condition. There are trails for novice up te experienced. The cost is set at $6.00 per persons. A chalet is open for refreshments. The service has been more than breaking-even this year. Snow-mobiing trails are also available in the forest and as well as groomed. Fourth generator in operation Construction work is nearing an end at the Darlington Nuclear Plant. The last reactor to be operational, Unit 4, was started up on Saturday, March l3th at 9:.54 a.m.. It is now at low power undergoing testing. Commis- sioning of the reactor wil at least take a month. Full power from the reactor is expected by the end of April. The other three Darlington units are now at 100 percent power and are producing enough power for the needs of three-quarters of Metro Toronto. Unemployînent rate dips in area The Unemploymnent rate in the Oshawa area d ips some in February and 'was some 1.1 percent below the national average which had been set at 10.8 percent. The 9.7 percent rate in the local area matches 11.6 percent in St. Catharines, 12.6 percent Windsor and 10.5 percent in Toronto. Kitchener- Waterloo, Ottawa and London ail came in iower than the local rate of 9.7 percent. Trent University summer courses at Durham Campus Trent University will be offering more than 20 courses this summer in Oshawa at ils Durham Campus. More than 15 différent subjects are-being offered during day and evening ses sions in six, eighit and 12 week sessions. Students can obtain a Trent degree in any of eight subjects, anthropology, cultural studies, economnics, English, history, political science, psychology and sociology. Bethany Church destroyed by ire St. Mary's Anglican Church ini Bethany was totally destroyed by fire in late February. The one- room, ail white clapboard church was built in 1852 and was centred in the community of Lifford. The church underwent restorations a few years ago and was insured for $80,000 at the urne of the recent fire. Oshawa Centre updating With a budget of $30 million the owners of the Oshawa Centre are in the throws of revamping the largest mail in the area. Work is expected to continue for a year in updating of heating, lighting, ceiling and other works. When compieted the mail wil have a neW look and house about 184 stores, along with 14 restaurant courts and 100,000 square feet of office space. Newtonville will go way down. If this site is chosen it will ruin the Stapieton Dairy Farmn which has been in operation for many generations.
