Dog-sled presentation a "Howl"for Pines students You don't. expect to see a dog sled teani racing through Southern Ontario, especially around the grounds of tbe Pines Senior Public. Its been a long, cold winter, but Newcastle isn't exactly frozen tundra, permafrost and glacial icefields. Around the back of scbool they come once again, no doubt raising the eyebrows of motorists on the 115 Higbway. Ail flying feet and furry, canine blur attached to a sied pulling the owner of tbis team, Bruce Langmaid. Langmaid brougbt bis dogsled team to tbe Pines Senior Public for a lunchtime presentation fast Tuesday. He explained the origin and evolution of the dogsled teani, explained the equipment used and finally took the dogs for a run around the school. As most people are well aware, the dog team was somewbat of a necessity in the earlier days of Northerni Canada. The Inuit people were the first to use the dog teani to pull their sleds. Trappers and miners wbo made tbeir way into the fat North in an effort to earn their living, adopted the concept as their means of transportation. Dogsledding as a prime mode of transit bas lost some of its popularity, but it remains as a popular recreational sport. Langmaid explained that as a sport there are two types, of racing, sprint racing and distance racing. Langmnaid races bis teýam in mid- distance competition. He and his fours. Dogs obviously are the most important factor of dog-sledding. There is bowever, other necessary equipment. There are different kinds of sleds that vàry in size and weight. An average basket sied, for example, weighs beween 22 and 25 pounds. A tobo ggan sied is built so that it will not sink into deep, soft snow. Ail1 sleds come equipped with a brake in the back, that the master bas control of. Other equipment that is necessary are harnesses that are worn by the dog, and cords that attach from tbe sied te the harness. Apart from the brake that is part of the sled, the'driver carnies a snow anchor that acts as an anchor to prevent the dogs from taling off. In the deep North, where snow is a different consistency than tbat bere, more of a bard, grainy consistency, the dogs wear booties made of polar fleece for protection. It is essential that the driver bave experience. The driver must push off with bis feet and then steer the teamn from the back of the sied. Langmaid and bis team of Huskies made a great impression on the students at the Pines. The presentation was a quitec a learning experience for those who maybe had thought dogsledding was a thing of the past.
