Woolner One of the groups attending Farm Safety Day, îakes the time by Carol-Ann Oster 1 go Urough paper like there is no tomormow and wben possible, I recycle and reuse wbat I can. Ini recent years, recycled paper bas earned a fairly large market share in the papcr industry. But wbat can be more tree-friendly than making your own paper. Ai the Orono Public Scbool Science Fair, as soon as you walked in through the gymnasium doors, there was grade one student Sophia Cooper teaching people how to do tbat jusi. Sophia had submitted a Science Fair entry on the proccss of making your own paper. E xamples of her success in the ficld wcrc hanging on the wall for vicwing, and on îhe table Sophia diligently set about demonstrating ber skill. The process, much to my ~xsurprise, is a relatively simple one. The miatcrials and equipment arc fcw. The ingrcdicnt.s needed for- the project arc jusi Cotton pulp. available from art stores, water, and a bit of patience. The equipmcnt consists of a screen with a suppo)rting border, a frame; a vat 10 hold Uic pulp and water; a tra'y; a heavy weigbît (Sophie used a tibm slab of l arbic); cotton for a quick group photo in front continuing with their workshops. of the Fire Safety House, before "t'ts play it Safe"' Farm Safety Day for Youths Approximateiy fifty youtîb from Durham East arc now more aware Of farmn and home safety precautions following a fun, hands-on worksbop presented at Evergreen Farîn & Garden, Taunton Rd. Newcastle carnies major portion of GRCA costs The Town of Newcastle Urough the Region of Durham supports the Ganaraska Region Conser- vation Authority with a total levy of $134,555 or 34 percent of the total municipal levies. The ORCA bas asked its member municipalities for an average one percent increase in levies tbis year. Due to equalized assessînent the Town of Newcastle wiil bear a 4.8 percent increase this year. 'Me total operating budget for the Authority in 1993 bas been set at $1.1 million. Municipalities will provide $403,580 of the total budget. A budget of $123,000 has been set for Uic foresi centre operation tbis year. This amnounit is to be raised strictly througb user fees with no financiai assistance from Uic Authority or province. iining like that found as linmng for coats; a blender; a paint brusb and; sponges and plastie since tbis can bc a wet procedure. Sophia allowed any interested participant to make their own piece of paper. The process is as follows: - Mix Cotton puip with water in your blender. - Add Uic mixture to a vat that lias water in it. - Place Uic frame atop of Uic screen, lining Uic edges up. - After mixing Uic water pulp mixture around with your band, dip the screen and framne into Uic vat in an up-down position, then pull it out, as if you were bailing water. - Tap down any roufgl edges gcntly with your finger. - Remove Uic frame from Uic screen being careful not to disrupt the pulp. - Lie a piece of the cotton lining on your tray and place the screcin on il, pulp side down. Gently tap witb your finger againsi Uic scrcen if there is any sticky place. - Fold Uic lîning over Uic wet pulp. If you make multiple sheets, place lining between cach one. rÀAÂ PINE RIDGE - .NUAC *Place the weight on top of the sheets of paper and iining. Leave the weight on for some urne. - After removing the weight, carefully pick up the wet sheet of paper and brush il onto a fiat surface (board), and allow to dry fully. -Voila!! Within a few hours, you have some paper, and you've saved a tree. If you want your paper to be more decorative, Sophia had some good ideas for'that, as welI. When the paper was stili wet, she piaceld between two pieces some string and coioured feathers. These were pressed between the two sheets and when the paper was dry, they provided added colour and texture. So, aside froîn Iearning something new and useful, we learned neyer to discount the ideas of youtb. Sophia may just be the next environmentaly conscjous enhitpm*ncur. The Orono Skating Club Carnival This past Saturday, the Orono Figure Skating Club hosted their annual Skating Carnivai, and out of common interest, 1 decided to attend. (l aiso got free tickets and backstage passes!!) Knowing many familiar faces in the performance belped me adjust better when it carne time to bang over the boards during the show, flapping my arms violently across the ice surface at certain skaters, striving witb ail adrenaline rushes to get their attention. I settled in comfortabiy, and found that trying to start the wave during a recording of "0 Canada" or yelling "Wheres the Blood?!" during a couple's dance number was flot the most appmopriate tbing to do., Even thougb 1 did flot expect it to happen, 1 bad kept al bopes on seeing two skaters step on the ice, latched on to ecdiother, throwing more punches than the Robert- Domi, match. But stili, 1 could flot see myseif in ut-er exciteme nt, as the referees pry them apart, and listening as the announcer awards 10 minutes and a carnivai misconduct to each. But action there was. From watching the youngsters dressed in bird outfits "waik" across the ice to a few accidentai collisions at center ice. 1 rather enjoyed my day. My congratulations goes out to my boss, Roy Forrester, who covered tie job of taking pictures of thc award winning performers. Even though 1 received a few comments here and there based on Statements such as, 'You shouldve been out there taking those pictures." "What if he feul, or went into convulsions or something?" Weli I owe you one, -big guy!
