The President of the Progressive Conservative Party in Durham, Marianne Manders, nominated Mr. Stevenson s0 that he may "continue his fine record." The nomination meeting was held on Thursday night at the Blackstock Commnunity Centre. Guest speaker for the evening was the Honourabie Doug Lewis, Solicitor General, 1 and representative for the riding of Simcoe North. Whecn speaking of Ross Stevenson, Manders says that 'there are few politcians who can equal Ross Stevenson." She later added, "it is no exaggeration to say that lhe has become a model of service" to his community. After being chosen as the representative for the Durham P.C.'s, Mr. Stevenison was invited to address the crowd. Mr. Stevenson explained that the "governments are being chailenged by the rapidity of change." He stated, as an example, th at in Durham Region in 1987 the population was recorded at 87,000. In 1991, the Region hiad grown i population to 120,000. "The constituency is growing, infrastructures are stressed, workloads are increasing." He added that "dîfficuit decisions are being made in Ottawa. Mr. Stevenson finished by boasting a proven record of success in heiping individuals, groups and industries in Durhamn Region. "I ask for your support 50 that we may move forward together." The Honourable Doug Lewis praised Ross Stevenson, saying that, "he makes a valuable contribution". Mr. Lewis believes that the Progressive Conservative Party will once again corne out on top after this federal election and was not shy in telling this to the assembled audience. "W've been kicked around, but this is our year to succeed," hie toid them. Mr. Lewis appears completely nonchalant about the question of the opposition parties. The NDP he says have no track record and the Liberals have diree views on each issue. The Progressive Conservatives, hie feels, will stick to basics, but change how they deal with the basîcs. The Economic report was a staff report based on recom- mendations and suggestions from a consultant's report, S. Chait, and recommendaions and suggestions from Lhe Mayor's Task Force. ILt came as a surprise to Mayor Hamre, town st-ff and to some members of council that an amended report had been undertaken which couid weli becomne known as the O'Toole Economic report. ILt becamne apparent at counicil that the O'Toole amended report had previously been circulated with Councs. Hooper, Hannah and Novak which supported al amnendments as suggested. Mayor Hamre said she received her copy of the report just prior to council meeting as had staff and Councs. Scott and-Dresiinski. The staff report made 18 recommendations many of which were foiiowed in the O'Toole amendments with somne exceptions which did bring about strained debate.
